Karnataka and a Nishadi stone at Ambale, Karnataka.

Chamrajanagar is a District Headquarters in the south part of Karnataka. This place was originally called as “Arikothara” during 12th Century and latter changed as “Chamarajanagar” during Chamaraja Wodeyar period.

During our recent visit to Chozha period Temples on the ancient trade route from Chamarajanagar to Kollegal in Karnataka State ( Gangapadi ), our first visit was to this Jinalaya at Chamarajanagar. Also we had seen the remains of a Jain temple / Basadi at Ambale. As per the inscriptions this Jain Temple at Chamarajanagar was called as “Punisa Jinalaya and “Thirikooda Basadi” and the same is called as “Sri Vijaya Paarthava Nandhaswamy Janabasadi”. The temple is being maintained beautifully and is in worship.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The inscriptions helps us to decide the antiquity of the temple. The Hoysala King Vishnuvardhan Bittiga, who was ruling the Gangawadi including Kongu, from the capital at Talakadu and Kolalapura. It registers that a grant of Land and oil from oil mill, for this Thirikuda basadi named Punisa Jinalaya, which he had caused to be erected, as also other basadis in “Arakottara” in “Enne Nadu”  by Punisa-dandadhipa. ( A minister in-charge of War & Peace ( Shanthivigrahi ), Punisamayya-II, ( 1117 CE ).    The record eulogises the donor whose genealogy is given as follows.

The donor dandanayaka Punisammayya-II, who is stated to have fought against the Thodavas, Kongas, Malayalas, etc,. He held the office of “sandhivigrahi” also. He got renovated basadis in Gangavadi. Ajita Munipatti of Dravidanvaya was the religious preceptor of the donor. It may be noted that donors grandfather Punisa Chamupa bears the epithet “Sasana-vachaka-Chakravarti”.

The record is dated saka 1039 ( 1117 CE ), Durmukhi, Jyestha ba 1, Mularkkaravara, might mean moola nakshatra, and Arkkavara. And on the given thithi, this nakshathra occurred. But the other details, of date are not quite regular. The given saka year was current and week day was Monday. After the mention of the thithi, the letter va is engraved which is normally would stand for the week day, Vaddavara. Vaddavara may mean either Tuesday or Saturday. The given details do not substantiate that. The corresponding date would be 1116 CE, May 29th, Monday.

Another Veera Narasimhan –III’s inscription record  is stated Saka 1201, Vishu Pushya su 15, Sunday Uthrayana- sankramana. The given thithi occurs on 1281 CE, December 25th when the weekday was Thursday. The given Saka year also is a mistake, for 1203.

It refers the rule Hoysala Veera Narasimha-III, and registers the grant of income from, Niru-kuli ( Water tax...?), nichandi (?), house tax, beduge etc, due from the devotees, to this basadi of Arakuthara  by all the gavundas, of the place including Bitti- Gavunda, son of Keta Gavunda  and Dase-gavunda son of Allala Gavunda

NISHADI STONE / நிசீதிகை கல்
On the way to Kollegal we came across a Nishadi stone along with the remains of a basadi under a banyan tree at Ambale.  This Nishadi stone was erected in memory of two disciples of two Gurus or same Guru, those took sallekhana. ( Fast unto death – a ritual followed in Jainism to attain moksha )
