Abhimuktheeswarar Temple / Sri Abhi Muktheeswarar Temple / அபிமுக்தீஸ்வரர் கோவில், Thirupperuvelur / Manakkal Ayyampettai / மணக்கால் ஐயம்பேட்டை, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 209th Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 92nd Sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. Now this place is called as Manakkal Ayyampet(tai).

In periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thalayalangadu. But Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruvanjiyam.

மருவார் ஊர் எரித்தவர்தம் திருவாரூர் வந்து அடைந்தார்

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram. Kodimara Vinayagar, Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is of swayambhu and a Jala is provided on the opposite to moolavar sannadhi. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mirukandu Maharishi, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai ( is in a separate sannathi ). Utsavars are in antarala.

In the outer prakaram Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Vinayagar and Maha Vishnu as Vaikunda Narayana Perumal. In the Lower level Navagrahas, Shaniswaran, Kshethra Bhairavar, Suriyan, Nalvar, Maha Lingam, Saraswateeswarar, Jambukeswarar, Iravateeswarar, Brahmapureeswarar and Durgai. On the upper level, Somaskandar, Natarajar Sabha in a vavval nethi mandapa, Dwara Vinayagar is on a pillar.  

Ambal is in a separate temple facing east in Veerasana sitting posture. Ambal is with 4 hands in abhaya and varada hastam.

The temple was built by Ko-chengat-Chozhan, of Mada Koil type about 10 feet above the ground level with 17 steps. A Single tier vesara vimana is over the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum antarala and a Vavval Nethi ardha mandapa.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. Also this temple was constructed as a mada style temple, believed that the original temple was constructed by Ko Chengat Chozha and latter reconstructed as a stone temple during Cozha’s period. 

LEGENDS
It is believed that Maha Vishnu, Murugan,Gauthamar, Birungi Munivar, Agasthiyar, Sukran worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Since Sukran worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, this is a Sukran parihara sthalam.

Lord Muruga worshiped Shiva, hence this place is called as Peruvelur also called as “Bhuloka Skandapuri”. It was told that this place obtained the name as Ayyampettai, since Lord Shiva is also called as “Ayyan”.
Also there was a king called Peruvel, ruled this place. Hence this place was called as Peruvelur with the addition of –Oor ஊர் ).

In one of the legend, there was a conflicts between Vayu and Adhiseshan regarding who is great. It was decided to hold mount Kailash by Adhiseshan and Vayu has to blew up. In the process a piece had fallen down on this place and the temple was a part of the hill. Adhiseshan also worshiped Lord Shiva, hence he is praised as “Seshapureeswarar”. 

Maha Vishnu took the form of Mohini on many occasions  to vanquish asuras. He came to this temple and worshiped lord Shiva to get back his original appearance. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, Skanda Sashti is celebrated in a grand manner. Special poojas are conducted on Vaikasi Visakam in the month Vaikasi ( May – June ), Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sept ), Skanda Sashti in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ),
Thaipoosam in the month Thai ( Jan – Feb ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ) and monthly pradoshams.

The temple will be kept opened between 08.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 18.00 hrs to 19.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH: 
The place Manakkal Ayyampet is on  the Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam road, bus route. All the buses  from Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam passes through this village. The temple is about 1 KM off Main road.
The Temple is 9.3 KM from Thiruvarur, 31 KM from Kumbakonam,  43.7 KM from Mayiladuthurai and 325 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Thiruvarur.
