Valiyan Kuttai & Pidari Rathas / வலையாங்குட்டை & பிடாரி அம்மன் ரதம் / மாமல்லபுரம் / Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Valiyankuttai and Pidari Rathas, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit”, under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places – தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organised by SASTRA & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19^th March 2023. This is one of the group of monuments of Mamallapuram a UNESCO Heritage site of Tamil Nadu.

These monolithic rathas are smaller in size compared to Shore temples on the banks of Buckingham panel. The Valayankuttai Ratha resembles the Arjuna Ratha and close to this there are two un-finished rock cut shrines facing east.

These monolithic Vimanas may belongs to late years of Pallava King Parameswaravarman-I ( 672 – 700 CE ) reign. Their features are like that of Rajasimha’s ( 700 – 727 CE ), Structural Temples. Both the Vimanas are finishned up to prasada / prastara level only. These Two monolithic rock cut temple are called as Pidari Amman Rathas.

இந்த இரு ஒற்றைக்கல் தளிகளும் கட்டுமானக் கோயில்களை ஒத்து செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இரு தளிகளும் அதிட்டானாம் இன்றி காணப்படுகின்றன. இடதுபக்கம் உள்ள தளி கருவறை, கருவறைக்குச் செல்ல இருபுறமும் படிக்கட்டுகள் செதுக்கப்பட்டது ஆரம்ப நிலையிலேயே காணப்படுகின்றது. இருதள திராவிட விமானம் ஹாரத்துடன் காணப்படுகின்றது.

வலதுபக்கம் உள்ள ஒற்றைக்கல்தளி இருதள நாகர விமானமாக ஹாரத்துடன் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கருவறை எதுவும் செதுக்கப்படவில்லை. அதற்கான அறிகுறிகளும் தென்படவில்லை.  

இந்த ஒற்றைக்கல் தளிகள் பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் நரசிம்மவர்மன் என்ற மாமல்லன் ( 630 – 668 CE ) காலத்தைச் சார்ந்ததாக கருதப்படுகின்றன.

A Small monolithic Temple known as Valayankuttai Ratha at Mamallapuram.

This Valayankuttai Ratham, carved unfinished monolithic was possibly initiated during the reign of Pallava King Narasimhavarman-I, Mamalla ( 630 – 668 CE ). This dvitala Vimanam has the sanctum and Mukha mandapam. The adhistanam is yet to be defined, and the pada is in various stages of Completion. The finished sikara has the usual features.

பிடாரி அம்மன் ரதங்களில் இருந்து சற்று தள்ளி இந்த ஒற்றைக்கல்தளி கானப்படுகின்றது. இத்தளி கருவறை, மற்றும் அர்த்த மண்டபத்துடன் கிழக்கு நோக்கிய முகமாக செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.  அதிட்டானம் இன்றி, இரண்டுதள நாகர விமானமாக தளங்களில் ஹாரத்துடன் காணப்படுகின்றது.

இந்த ஒற்றைக்கல் தளி பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் நரசிம்மவர்மன்  என்ற மாமல்லன் ( 630 – 668 CE ) காலத்தைச் சார்ந்ததாகக் கருதப்படுகின்றது.
