Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch on the South side. Stucco images of Shiva and Parvati as rishabaroodar on the top of the arch. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of maha mandapam. Stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of maha mandapam. Vinayagar and Murugan are in front of sanctum sanctorum. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal Sri Ananda Valli is in a separate sannidhi facing south with abhaya varada hastam. There is also an entrance on the south side of the maha mandapam.
In praharam Selva Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar & Visalakshi, Nagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas ( Natarajar with Sivakami and Manickavasagar stucco images are on the top of Navagraha sannidhi ), Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Veerabhadra and Brahmi.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is of Gajaprishta style with pada bandha adhistanam on a square base. The complete temple was constructed with bricks during recent years. The pilasters of brahma kantha pilasters with Kalasam, thadi, kudam, mandi, palagai. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. A two tala Vimanam, which includes adhi tala is on the sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple is believed to be constructed during Pallava period, since most of the Gajaprishta Vimanam temples are constructed during Pallava period in Thondai Nadu. The temple was reconstructed latter with brick and cement. The mandapam is of 300 to 400 years old, may be during Vijayanagaras / Nayakas. Fish and snake bas-reliefs are found on the ceiling slabs. No inscription is found to prove its antiquity.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 06th June 2011.
LEGENDS
Asper the legend, to get rid of Shiva’s Curse, Ambal came to this place in the form of Cow and worshipped Shiva of this temple and got reunited. Hence this is celebrated in the form of Panguni Uthira Thirukalyana Vaibhavam in almost all Shiva temples. Here Devotees worships Shri Shiva and Participate in the Panguni Uthira Thirukalyana vaibavam for Good relationship between husband and wife, marriages, Child boon and business development,etc,.
In another legend, Iravata is the vahana of Indra. When the Maharaishi Dhurvasa gave a garland / Lotus flower which he received from Shri Shiva to Indra. Indra didn't gave respect to the flower and kept on his vahana's mathaka. Iravata / Airavata took the flower and threw it on the floor and crushed with it's legs. On seeing this Dhurvasa has got angry and cursed to become an ordinary elephant. Iravatham came to this temple and worshipped Shiva to get rid of the Curse, given by Maharishi Dhurvasa. Hence Shiva is called as Airavateeswarar.
