HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to 11th to 12th Century, Chozha period built with bricks and also reconstructed during recent years. Since the temple was built with bricks, gifts given to this temple are recorded in a separate stone.

The Kulothunga Chozhas- III’s  24th reign year inscription on a separate stone records an endowment for which cows are gifted to this temple by a person. As per the inscriptions this place was under Jyangonda Chozha mandalathu, Amoor Kottathu Amoor nattu Manamai and Lord Shiva was called as Aludayar Thiruvakatheechra Udayar. This place retains its same name since Chozha period.

The other inscription ( SII 26 - 274 ) ( not available now ) Sundarapandyan's 13th Reign year records the gift of two cows for burning sandhi lamps in the temple of Tiruvagattisvaramudaiyar of Manamai alias Jananatha nallur in, Amur Nadu under Amur Kottam of Jayangonda Chozhamandalam, by a woman named Perunkarunaiyatti alias Devarkalabhaiyam, a nyayattar . of Uttaranmerur. The Cows are stated being received by many persons including Gavutaman, Nangai Bhattan, Vadugapillai, a Devakanmi, having right of worship in the temple,  and Ammaiappan Samiyamudali alias .... who had agreed to burn the sandhi lamp accordingly.

Another Inscription ( SII 26 - 275 ), ( is also not available in this temple ) Jatavarman Sundarapandyan-I's 7th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a sandhi lamp by the same woman ( above inscription 274 ), is the daughter of Sattuavarappu Purridangondarof Perumpachcheri. It is stated that this was received by Sivabramanas Gavutaman Ammaiappan alias Panayeswara Bhattan, Nangai Bhattan Vadugabhattan, and agreed to burn the sandhi lamp accordingly.

As per ARE 257 of 1909 ( SII -26, 272 believed to belongs to this temple ). This incomplete inscription belongs to Kulothunga Chozha -I's 6th reign year records an accident. A Certain Perungadan a Palli of Manamai, in Amur Nadu, in Amur Kottam, of Jayangonda Chozhamandalam, and another Palli of the same place name Maran Adavalan, went hunting. There Setti Perungadan shot an arrow on a Virugam ( an wild animal like leopard ). The arrow, however unfortunately hit, Maran Adavalan, and caused his death. The inscription stops at this point.
