Sri Agastheeswarar Temple /ஸ்ரீ அகஸ்தீஸ்வரர் கோயில், அனகாபுத்தூர் / Anakaputhur, Chennai, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Agastheeswarar Temple was a part of Shiva Temple, Maha Vishnu Temple, Jain Temple and Buddhist temples at Anakaputhur, Tharapakkam, Kolapakkam and Buddhavedu on 26th December 2021. This visit also combines the search of Buddha idol unearthed near this Agastheeswarar Temple.



This is one of the Thevara vaippu sthalam sung by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal. He has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of Agatheechuram along with Nandhikechuram, Mahalaechuram, Nagechuram, Kodeechuram, Kondeechuram, Kukkudechuram,  Akkeechuram, Adakechuram, Ayaneechuram Aththeechuram, Siddheechuram and Ramechuram.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Kodimaram, Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is in a raised sanctum sanctorum. Stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is on a round avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

Prasanna Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Murugan, Ayyappan, Chandikeswarar, Bairavar, Saniswaran and Navagrahas. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south. Ambal is holding Pasa angusam in the upper hands and lower hands are in abhaya and Varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhistanam with three patta kumuda. The Original temple was reconstructed with bricks and cement. A Two tier Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Original temple may belongs to Pallava period and reconstructed during various periods. The present temple was reconstructed with bricks and Cement, during recent years. On 01st April 2010 maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted after maintenance.

LEGENDS
It is believed that this is one the 108 Shiva Lingas installed and worshiped in Thondai mandalam by Agathiyar on the way to Pothigai Hills to balance the earth during Shiva and Parvati’s celestial wedding. It is also believed that Pandavas came to this temple and worshiped Lord Shiva during their exile.

Devotees prays Lord Shiva and Ambal to get cured from chronic deceases for 45 days ( one mandalam ), to remove marriage obstacles and Child boon.

It is believed that the elephants carried water and flower required for Pooja. Hence this place was called as Anaika Puthur, which has got corrupted to the present name of Anakaputhur.

The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.
