Thiru Neelakanteswarar Temple / Sri Neelagandeswarar Temple / திரு நீலகண்டேஸ்வரர் கோயில், நீலாங்கரை, Neelankarai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Neelakandeswarar  Temple at Neelankarai was a Part of not popular temple’s of Chennai South Visit on 27th November 2022. This temple is on the west side of the ECR Road in Neelankarai..

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch.  Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati are on top of the mandapam. Moolavar is on a round avudayar, big in size. There is no images on the kostas.

In praharam, Vinayagar, Nagars under peepal tree, Ayyappan, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar and Navagragas. Ambal is not in a separate sannidhi, but installed in the sanctum sanctorum itself facing south.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a metacolour Sheet Mukha mandapam. The construction of the temple do not follow any temple architecture style.  Instead of regular Vimanam, a salakara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.  The locations of Vinayagar sannidhi and Sri Valli Devasevasena Subramaniyar Sannidhi are also not in their respective places. 



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is claimed that the temple is 700 years old (may be moolavar ). But the present structure may be of 150 to 200 years old. 

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Shiva swallowed the poison which came out first, in the process of churning milk ocean by Devas and Asuras for the amirtha. Ma Parvati stopped the poison at throat itself by pressing with fingers. Due to this the throat changed in to blue colour. Hence Shiva is called as Neelakandeswarar. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya, New year days, Pongal, Thai poosam, Pradosham, Maha shivaratri etc,.


TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 11.30 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is on the west side of the ECR at Neelankarai, close to Neelankarai Bus stop. The temple is about 4.4 KM from Thiruvanmiyur Bus Depot,  5.2 KM from Thiruvanmiyur MRTS Railway Station, 17.5 KM from Chennai Central Station.
