LEGENDS
Varuna had stolen the wife of Bhragaspathi the Devaguru and was caught by the Brahma Hathi dhosam.
After plucking the 5th head of Brahma, Shiva had the dharsan of 11 Narayana Perumals at the Thirunangur and got relieved from Brahmahathi dosham.
Arjuna also called as Parthan, had the darshan of Narayana , who was driving the Chariot during Gurushetra war, of this temple. Hence Perumal is called as Parthasarathy.
As per the legend the 11 temples of Thirunangur are closely associated with each other. After Datchayini jumped in to Dakshan’s Yaga kunda. Shiva took the body of Datchayini and danced furiously. Each time the jada mudi touches the ground, 11 forms of Shiva appeared. The Celestial deities afraid, that if Shiva’s dance continued, the entire creation will be ceased. So they requested Maha Vishnu to stop Shiva’s dance. On Seeing Maha Vishnu Shiva became normal and requested Maha Vishnu to appear 11 different forms at this place, Thirunangur. Maha Vishnu is also called as “Thamaraikannudiyabiran - the one with lotus eyes”.
It is believed that Agasthiyar, Bharatwajar, Gautama and Varuna worshipped Sri Parthasarathy of this temple.
As per Padma Purana, the Arjuna came to this place on pilgrimage, where the sage Agasthiyar was doing penance. Arjuna was feeling thirsty and requested Agasthiar to give him water to drink. When he searched there were no water around and Agasthiyar asked Arjuna to pray Krsihna. Satisfied with the prayer, Krishna gave a sword to dig the ground to get water. Arjuna did as per Krishna’s words and obtained water. Krishna appeared as Parthasarathy in front of Arjuna and initiated the knowledge to him. Hence this place is called as Parthan+ Palli ( School ).
