The temple is facing east with an entrance from South and west. Stucco Shiva and Parvati are on the west side entrance arch. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of sanctum sanctorum under a mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of ardha mandapam. Moolavar is little short. In kostam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Durga.
In Praharam, Runa vimosana bilva Kubera Lingam, Maha Lakshmi ( about 7 feet tall ), Ayyappan, Somaskandar, Bairavar, Navagrahas, Anjaneyar and Chitra Gupta.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple was raised from debris during recent years. It is believed that the original temple was constructed during 8th to 9th Century Pallava period, the Vimanam is reconstructed with bricks similar to Pallava architecture partially. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. The adhistanam is on a upa peedam. The adhistanam is of pada bandha adhistanam with three patta kumudam. An eka tala Gajabirushta Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.
The Maha Lakshmi shrine was built using Vijayanagara period pillars, which was recovered from the debris.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the display this temple was built by the Sambuvarayar King about 950 years before. His son Mallinathan expanded the temple as Shiva Vishnu Temple. During his period this place was called as Santhana Mangalam and Ambal was called as Santhana Gowri ( Maragathavalli ).
In 1996, the temple reconstruction work was started under the initiation of MA Anbu, as a Trustee of this temple and the Devotees. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in 1998 after completion of reconstruction.
Mahalakshmi is about 7 feet tall, in Standing posture. It was told that this temple was a Shiva Vishnu Temple and the same was destroyed during Nawab’s /Muslim ruler’s invasion. The Perumal was thrown in to the lake and the temple was also razed down.
There were two Ambal of which one was unearthed. The Chitra Gupta idol was unearthed about 6 years before and installed near the Rishaba mandapam.
A Square Avudayar was also unearthed. The same was installed as Runa vimosana bilva Kubera Lingam with a new banam on the back side of the sanctum Sanctorum, under bilva tree.
Ashtabandha maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 11th March 2010 and in first half of 2022.
LEGENDS
During the Pallava King Mallinatha’s period this place was also called as Mahappair. There is a hearsay story behind that. The King didn’t have Child, so he prayed to Shiva and Ambal of this temple. Due to the grace of Shiva he has got a Child, from then onwards this place was called as Mahappair, which has got corrupted to Mogappair. In Sanskrit the same is called as Santhana mangalam.
The legend of this temple is associated to Markandeyar and the Thirukadaiyur legend is also applicable to this temple. Hence it is auspicious to conduct sashtiapthapoorthi, Sathabhishekam, Bheema ratha shanthi, Ayush Homam and Mruthyunjaya Homam at this temple.
It is believed that worshiping Runa vimosana bilva Kubera Lingam will get a good life without decease, life with out loan and get rid of Devakadan, Rushikadan, Bhutakadan, pitru kadan and Manushyakadan.
