This is one of the Mada Temple constructed by Ko Chenkat Chozhan. Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might  have been existed before 7th Century and the same was reconstructed as a stone temple by Chozhas and further extended by Pandyas and Vijayanagara Nayakas.
Sundarar came and worshiped along with Cheraman Peruman.

The inscriptions recorded from this temple belongs to Chozha Kings, Parantaka-I, Rajaraja-I, Kulothunga Chozha, Vikrama Chozha, Rajendra Chozha-III, and Maratha periods. As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as “Vedavanamudayar”, “Thirumaraikadudayar”, “Thirumaraikattalvar” and Nataraja as Bhuvani Vidangar. This place was in Umbala nattu Kundroor Nadu.

Thiribhuvana Chakravarthy Kulothunga Chozha’s  inscription records the endowment of reciting the “Thirupathigam” for which donations were made.

Most of the Chozha period inscriptions records the endowment of burning perpetual lamps with a ulakku oil, nazhi oil per year, Naivedyam, sacred bath, Celebration ( in the months Aippasi, Masi, Thiruvathirai in the month Margazhi ) etc,. For the same money, ( Eezhakasu ) paddy, Gold, Sheeps / Goats ( 90 Sheep per lamp )  fly whisk Gold plated / Silver, oil, Ghee ( measured in ulakku, Kana nazhi, Thirumaraikadan in the name of god  )and lands were donated to this temple. Some of them are received by the Siva Brahmins / bhattars of the temple apart from Temple Sabha. These inscriptions records that lands are held by the Siva Brahmins as Irayili ie. as Tax free. The lands are measured in  Veli, Ma, Kani etc,. The donations are made by the servants of the palace also.

This temple is under the administrative control of Yazhpanam Varani adheenam. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 14th July 2000.

LEGENDS
This place was called as Maraivanam, Vedavanam, Sathyagiri, Adhisethu and Thenkailayam during ancient times.  It is believed that Thasikethu, Swethakethu, Sundarar, Cheraman Perumal, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Thirugnanasambandar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. This Temples Lord Shiva blessed a rat, which increased the wick of the lamp to give brighter light accidentally, to be born as “Mavali Chakravarthy”. The same was mentioned by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal in his hymns.

Lord Shiva as “Maraikattu manalar” is with Parvati in kalyana kolam is on the back side of the Moolavar. Completely applied with sandal paste. Once in a year thirumanjanam will be done, the sandal paste will be removed during that time. Lord Shiva with Parvati gave Kalyana Kola darshan to Agasthiyar.

This is one of the Saptha Vidanga Sthalams. The details are... ( The others are Thiruvarur – Veedhi Vidangar, Ajapa Natanam, Nagapattinam ( Nagai karonam), - Sundara Vidangar, Vici Nadanam, Thirukaravasal – Adi Vidangar, Kukkuda nadanam, Thirukkuvalai ( Thiru kolili ) – Avani Vidangar, Brunga nadanam, Thirunallar – Nagara Vidangar, Unmatha nadanam, Thiruvaimur – Nlla Vidangar, Kamalana nadanam  and Vedaranyam ( ThirumaraiKadu) – Bhuvai Vidangar, Hamsapada nadanam. It is believed that all Vidanga Shiva Lingas are gifted by Indra to Musukunta Chakravarthy.

As per the legend, the main entrance doors are closed and devotees are entering through side doors during Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal’s visit. They were told that 4 vedas worshiped Lord Shiva even after the temple entrance was closed. As per Sekkizhar...

So Thirugnanasambandar requested Appar to sing hymns so that the main door can open. Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns with 10 songs. The temple doors opened after the completion of hymns.

Appar requested ThiruGnanasambandar to sing hymns to close the door and open again for the devotees to worship Lord Shiva. With one song, the doors were closed. Since then the temple doors were functioned in usual manner.

கண்பொற்பு அமைந்த றுதல்காள கண்டர் அருளால் கடிதுடனே
திண்பொன் கதவம் திருக்காப்புச் செய்தது எடுத்த திருப்பாட்டில்

Appar was little upset, since the doors are opened only after he completes 10 poems / songs of the hymns. But the doors were closed with one song of the Hymns, sung by Thirugnanasambandar. In that night Lord Shiva came in his dream and told him to follow since he is at Thiruvamur. Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal followed Lord Shiva and reached Thiruvaimur. In the mean time Thirugnanasambandar, searched for Appar. He also went to Thiruvaimur and Lord Shiva gave darshan to both.

பொன்னின் மேனி வெண்ணீறு புனைந்தா கோலப் பொலிவினோடும்

This is the birth place of Paranjothi Munivar and Thayumanavar. Agasthiyar, Musukunthan, Gowthama, Vishwamitra, Vasistar, Naradar, Brahma, Maanthatha worshiped lord Shiva of this temple.

Maratha period paintings of Lord Shiva’s various forms are on the sanctum walls.

Abhishekam will be done daily to Maragatha Vidangar. Poojas will be done to Chandrasekar, when there is no procession. During that time “Pattam” will is tied to Chandrasekarar, instead of Thyagaraja. Hence it is called as “Chandrasekara Pattam” and in Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal Thevaram Lord Shiva is mentioned as “Pattam Kattiya Chenni Paramar”.
