Thiruvidaikazhi Murugan Temple / திருவிடைகழி முருகன் திருக்கோயில் / Balasubramanya Swamy Temple & Pavavimochana Peruman Temple, Thiruvidaikazhi, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Thiruvidaikazhi Murugan and Sri Kameswarar, Shiva temple at Thiruvidaikazhi was a part of Shiva and Maha Vishnu Temples around Sirkazhi Visit on 1st & 2nd July 2023.


Even-though this temple is dedicated to Sri Kameswarar, Shiva, popularly known for “Thiruvidaikazhi Murugan temple”.  This is one of the Murugan / Kandan Temple which, which has got Thiruvisappa Thevara hymns. In Thiruvisaippa, Senthanar praises Sri Murugan as Kumaravel. Senthanar Swamigal attained Mukti in this sthalam.

Arunagirinathar also sung hymns Thirupugazh in praise of Murugan of this temple.  Murugan of this temple is also called a “Kuravadi Kumaran”.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple facing East with a first level 7 tier and a second level 4 tier Rajagopuram. Kambathadi mandapam, Dwajasthambam, Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram under a metacolour Sheet mandapam. Dwarapalakas ( with trishul is attached to the makuda ) are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Rishabam and Elephant ( vahana of Sri Subramaniar ) are in the ardha mandapam.

In Sanctum Sanctorum, Murugan is installed at the centre and a Shiva Lingam is installed on the back side sannidhi. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Lingothbavar, Brahma, Ardhanareeswarar and Durgai.

In praharam, saptamatrikas, Naganathar ( Thirupidavur ), Chandikeswararas (  – Two, One of Shivaa Temple and the another for Murugan Temple - சிவச்சண்டேசுவரர்குகச்சண்டேசுவரர்  ), Sri Kamaeswara Lingam, Spatika Lingam, Papavinasa Lingam,  Vasishta Lingam, Chandran, Arunagirinathar, Senthanar, Vinayagar, Subramaniar, Naganatha Lingam, Gajalakshmi, Sthala vruksham KuRRa maram with Shiva Padra Lingam and Ayyanar.  Also in praharam Devasena is in separate sannidhi.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a maha mandapam. The main sanctum sanctorum is on a prati bandha adhisthanam with padma jagathy, Vrutha Kumudam and Yazhivari. The Bhitti starts with Vedika and the pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, plain mandi, palakai and Vettu pothyal. The Prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus. Bhuta ganas are in the Valapi. A brick, one tala ( totally 2 talas with adi thala ), Gajaprishta vimana is on the bhumidesam. The Shiva Sannidhi Vimanam is of ekatala Nagara Vimanam.

Mandapas are of Vavvalnethi type built during Maratha period.






HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple was built during 8th to 9th Century Pallava / Chozha Period.  Latter mandapas are added during Maratha’s period.

As per the inscriptions, Murugan was called as “Thirukuraathudaiyar”. The inscription records the endowments  given to Veda Pandit and lands are gifted as irayili.. ie removing the taxes. Also there were Mutts existed / established in this place and donations are also made to mutts.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 01st September 1977 after thirupani and now the temple is preparing for the Kumbabhishekam during the author’s visit.



LEGENDS
Sri Subramaniar killed Iranyasuran son of Surabadmam. To get rid of sin, Sri Subramaniar worshiped Shiva under the Kura maram ( Tree ) and got relieved for the sin. Hence Shiva of this temple is called as Papavinasa Perumal. Rahu bhagwan also worshipped Murugan of this temple. Hence to get rid of the Rahu dosha, devotees worships Murugan of this temple. Devotees also worships Navagrahas to get rid of navagraha dosha.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, thaipoosam, sashti, Panguni uthiram, Thiruvithirai etc.

The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
Since frequency of bus facility is limited, it is recommended to hire an auto from Thirukadaiyur.
The temple is about 6.5 KM from Thirukadaiyur, Shiva Temple,  28.5 KM from Vaitheeswarankoil, 28.6 KM from Sirkazhi Sattanathar Temple,  25 KM from Mayiladuthurai, 50 KM from Kumbakonam and 265 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Mayiladuthurai.
