Katheragandla Shivalayam / Sri Sambasiva Swamy Temple, Katheragandla / శ్రీ సాంబశివ స్వామి దేవాలయం, కథేరగండ్ల, , YSR District / Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh.

The visit to this Sri Sambasiva Swamy Temple was a part of “Shiva and Vishnu Temples / Rock cut Cave temples of Andhra Pradesh Visit”, on 24th June 25th June 2023. This 13th to 14th Century Shiva Temple was a part of Katheragandla is about 500 meter off from the main road and west side of River, a tributary of Penna River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
This temple is facing west with a newly built ( under construction ) Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is very small. Ambal Sri Ishta Kameshwari is in a separate sannidhi facing the same direction of Moolavar ie east. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya Varada hastam. There is no parivara sannadhis and koshta murtis



ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was built with bricks. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum and ardha mandapam. The Sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhisthanam with Jagathy, Threepatta Kumudam and pattigai. A two tier Vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the priest of sri Chennakesava Perumal temple’s priest, this temple is older than the Sri Chennakesava Swamy Temple, ie 13th to 14th Century.

Now it is proposed to renovate the temple and built new sannidhis for Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Rishabam, Simham, Navagrahas, Dwajasthambam, Rajagopuram, Prahara walls, for which donations are requested.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, this temple is 5200 years old. The Shiva Lingam was installed and consecrated by the grand son of Pandavas, the King Sri Janame jaya Maharaja.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Maha shivaratri days.

Since the temple is under renovation the temple can be accessed all the time and sanctum gate will be kept open for darshan.

The temple at Chennavaram is about 4.8 KM from Porumamilla, 38 KM from Badvel, 82 KM from Kadapa railway station, 147 KM from Nellore.
