Sri Kalatheeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ காளத்தீஸ்வரர் கோயில், புதுகும்மிடிபூண்டி / Pudugummidipoondi, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kalatheeswarar Temple at Pudugummidipoondi was a part of “Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Saptamatrikas and Jain Tirthankara Temples Visit”, in and around Gummidipoondi and Minjur on 13th May 2023. The temple bears a newly constructed temple’s look, and not the old temple’s look as claimed.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch with Stucco image of Shiva & Parvati with Vinayagar and Murugan on both sides. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati are on the top of the mandapam. Balipeedam, Rishabam are in front of the temple. Moolavar in the sanctum is little tall on round avudayar. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. In koshtam,Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In the out praharam, Nagars with Vinayagar and a Shiva Lingam under peepal tree, Chandikeswarar, Ambal GnanaPrasunnambal, Kala Bairavar and Navagrahas.

Ambal GnanaPrasunnambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya and Varada hastam.


ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is of square in shape with a Two tala vesara Vimanam. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams.

The total temple was reconstructed during recent years with brick and cement.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is claimed that the original temple belongs to Chozha period and no evidence in the form of inscription is found in the temple. The Thirtha Mandapam was built  in the year 1936 by K A Ananda Chettiar ‘s sons G A Subramaniya Chettiar and Ramalinga Chettiar. 

The Mukha mandapam was built by G A Subramaniya Chettiar son of K A Ananda Chettiar, handed over on 09th December 1985.

Jeernodharana maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 17th April 2022, with the contributions from public.

LEGENDS
Kalahasthi – Snake + Elephant worshipped Shiva of this temple. As per the legend, The snake king worshipped Shiva of this temple with precious stones. The Elephant brought flowers and water in its trunk, had done abhisheka and pooja with flowers.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Mahashivaratri, etc.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is about 3.8 KM from Gummidipoondi railway station,  16 KM from Ponneri, 20 KM from Periyapalayam, 43 KM from Chennai central and 60.6 KM from Tiruvallur.
Nearest railway station is Gummidipoondi.
