Vellieswarar Koil / Sri Valleeswaran Koil / Sri Velleeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ வெள்ளீஸ்வரர் கோயில், மணப்பாக்கம் / Manapakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

This is one of the Shiva and Vishnu Temples built on the banks of the holy river Adyar, after it comes through the Meenambakkam airport, at Manapakkam, an old settlement in Chennai metropolitan area. The present structure may belongs to 200 to 300 years old.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with balipeedam and Rishabam under Concrete mandapam. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati as Rishabarooder in on the top of the ardha mandapam entrance. Stucco drapalakas are at the entrance of Sanctum Sanctorum. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South in the ardha mandapam. Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

In praharaam Vinayagar, Sri Bala Murugan, Naavagrahas, Bairavar, Nagars under a peepal tree and Saptamatrikas.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The Ardhamandapam is supported with square & Octagonal pillars and Vettu Pothyal. Solar and Lunar eclipse representation is in the form of petroglyphs.

The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam. The complete temple was reconstructed with Brick and cement. An ekatala vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. The temple is about 2 feet below the ground level. There is no stucco images on the Vimanam koshtams.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple is believed to be more than 300 years old, but the present structure may be 100 to 200 years old.

The temple was gifted on 15-08-1985, by A Swaminathan ( 11-05-1914 ) and A Susila Ammal ( 10-03-1957 ).

The first year Thiruvizha is conducted on 16th September 2000.  Maha Kumbhabhishekam was held on 11th September 2011.



POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, etc. MuRRum othuthal was conducted regularly by the Shiva Devotees.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 10.30 hrs and 15.00 hrs to 19.30 Hrs.

This temple is about 2.5 KM off from Chennai – Bangalore via Porur - Poonamallee and MIOT International Hospital.
The temple is 3.8 KM from Chennai Trade Centre, 6.5 KM from Porur Junction, 7.5 KM from Guindy, 10.5 KM from Koyambedu and  20.5 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway Station is Guindy.
