Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Thattankulam, Choolai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple was a part of “Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples, Lesser known Shiva Temples, Kutty Andavar Temple and Amman Temples Visit", in Chetpet, Aminjikarai & Choolai, on 18th September 2022. This Kasi Viswanathar Temple is inside the temple complex of Sri Angala Parameswari Amman Temple. Even though the Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple is believed to be much older than, Amman Temple, the temple complex is called in the name of Sri Angala Parameswari Temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram on the south side. The Kasi Viswanathar Temple is immediately after the Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are in front of the temple. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar and BalaMurugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is little short on a raised avudayar. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In the inner prakaram, Nalvar, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Natarajar, Bairavar and Ambal Vishalakshi. Ambal is in standing posture facing South.

In the outer prakaram, Vishwakarma, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, an anthill, Navagrahas and Nagras under Peepal Tree, Saptha Kannis. The Angala Parameswari temple is after Kasi Viswanathar temple. The Temple tank is in front of the temple with water.




ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a maha mandapam. From adhistanam to prastaram, the temple was built with stone. Various Bhuta gana’s faces, Munis faces are inside the makara thorana.  An two tier dravida stucco vimanam is above the sanctum sanctorum.

The mandapa walls has the stucco bas relief of Markandeyar purana, Parkadal churning, Kalahasti sthalapurana, Ravana lifting mount Kailash, Vinayagar’s Gnana pazham purana, Natarajar thandavam, Angala Parameswari’s puranas and much more.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was told that this temple is 500 years old, but the present structure indicates that this temple may be 200 to 300 years old. The full details are not known.

The 5 tier Rajagopuram was built and maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 09th July 2009.



LEGENDS
This temple has three specialties, they are  Moorthy, Theertham and Thalam. Kasi Viswanathar as moorthy, Sakthi Thirukulam as Theertham and Angala Parameswari as thalam, sitting on the laps of Pavadai Rayar.
 
Lot of Locks are locked on the grills of the temple tank. It is believed that the unsolved problems will be solved by Lord Shiva and Angala Parameswari of this temple,by providing the lock.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Theipirai ashtami days,

Chithirai month new year day is celebrated as annual festival. Eka dhina laksharchana will be conducted on pournami day. 

On week days, Bairavar Pooja, Rahu kala poojas in Navagraha Sannidhi, Sankada hara Chaturthi in Vinayagar temple, Kiruthigai day Vaikasi Visakam are celebrated in Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar sannidhi,

The temple is on the Angalamman Koil Street, in Thattankulam a part of Choolai.   
600 Meters from Barracks Road Bus Stop, The temple is about 2.7 KM from Egmore Metro, 2.6 KM from Chennai Central, 11. 00 KM from Koyambedu.
Nearest Railway Station  is Chennai Central Station.
