Sri Angala Parameswari Temple, Thattankulam, Choolai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to the Sri Angala Parameswari Temple was a part of “Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples, Shiva Temples, Kutty Andavar Temple and Amman Temples Visit" in Chetpet, Aminjikarai & Choolai, on 18th September 2022. The temple complex consists of Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple and Sri Angala Parameswari Amman Temple. Even though the Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple is believed to be much older than the Amman Temple, the temple complex is called in the name of Sri Angala Parameswari Temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are..
The 5 Tier Rajagopuram is on the South side. This temple facing east with a separate balipeedam, dwajasthambam and Simha vahanam.

During initial days, Angala Parameswari was in a small sannidhi. Usually Angala Parameswari will be sitting with left leg folded and right leg will be in hanging position, but in this temple Angala Parameswari as a young girl sitting on the left lap of Pavadai Rayar.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a maha mandapam. The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to Prastaram, built with stone. An eka thala salakara stucco Vimanam is on the sanctum Sanctorum.  

The kitchen for preparing pongal for Sri Angala Parameswari is on the north west corner of the temple complex.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was told that this temple is 500 years old, but the present structure indicates that this temple may be 200 to 300 years old. The full details are not known.

The 5 tier Rajagopuram was built and maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 09th July 2009.



LEGENDS
Devotees worships Angala Parameswari for Child boon, to remove marriage obstacle, to get rid of Black magic / billi soonyam, eval etc.  It is believed that after taking bath in the temple tank, circumambulate the temple, on 3 amavasya days and all the wishes will be fulfilled.

As per the legend, Brahma did a penance on Shri Shiva for five heads like, Shiva. Satisfied his penance, Shiva gave the boon of 5 heads. After getting 5th head, Brahma was over proud of him and behaved like Shiva. Since Ambal had the confusion of identification, asked Shiva to remove one head of Brahma. Shiva sent his Bhuta ganas to cut the 5th head. But the head was growing as soon as it was cut. Then Shiva himself came and cut the 5th head. But the 5th head also grown. In the mean time Ambal requested her brother Maha Vishnu to help to solve this problem. Maha Vishnu told that, sofor 999 heads were cut and after cutting 1000th head, Shiva should hold it in hand without dropping on the ground. After cutting 100th head, Brahma's 5th head sticked to Shiva’s hand, with that he was roaming on many places. 

In the mean time Brahma’s wife Saraswati cursed Ambal to take Rakshasa appearance. Ambal came to Melmalayanur with rakshasa appearance wearing shabby cloths. As per Maha Vishnu’s advice, Ambal prepared 3 balls of food and feed 2 balls on the Brahma’s Kabalam. The third one, Ambal dropped on the ground. The Brahma’s 5th Kabalam left Shiva’s hand and started eating the 3rd ball of food. As soon as the 5th head left from the hand, Shiva Closed his hands and got relieved from Brahma hatya dosha.  Ambal pressed the 5 head with her leg and it went in to the earth and disappeared. This was celebrated as mayana kollai at MelMalayanur. The same Ambal is also blesses her devotees at this temple as Angala Parameswari.

Lot of Locks are locked on the grills of the temple tank. It is believed that the unsolved problems will be solved by Lord Shiva and Angala Parameswari of this temple. By providing the lock. 


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Fridays, devotees do the anga pradhakshanam after taking bath in the temple tank. In addition to that, Sithangam, Periyandavar Pooja, Muneeswarar Pooja, Naga Pooja, Naga dosha pooja, Kanni poojas are conducted in this temple.

Devotees used to conduct ear boring Ceremony and Tonsuring of their Children, considering Sri Angala Parameswari as their kula deivam.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.30 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is on the Angalamman Koil Street, in ThattanKulam a part of Choolai.   
600 Meters from Barracks Road Bus Stop, The temple is about 2.7 KM from Egmore Metro, 2.6 KM from Chennai Central, 11. 00 KM from Koyambedu.
Nearest Railway Station  is Chennai Central Station.
