HISTORY
Thiruvenkadar was born to Sivanesar and Gnanakamalambigai of Kaveripoompattinam. Since he was born due to the grace of Lord Shiva of Thiruvenkadu, he was named as Thiruvenkadar. He married Sivakalai, a girl from a merchant family. They went to Thiruvidaimarudur and prayed Shri Shiva for a Child. There a person called Sivasarumar, a Shiva Devotee gave a male child, saying the child was found on the on the banks of the temple tank. Thiruvenkadar named the child as Marudhapiran and brought up. When he grew young, Thiruvenkadar sent him for business to overseas. On return, his son brought a sack contains cow dung cakes and husk. This made Thiruvenkadar angry and locked him in a room. Then he went outside and came back and found Marudhapiran was not in the locked room.  His wife gave him a box contains a palm leaf and a broken head needle, which his son Marudhapiran given to her. The note written on the palm leaf reads as “kathu aruntha oosiyum vaaraathu kaan kadai vazhikkee - காதற்ற ஊசியும் வாராது காண் கடைவழிக்கே". The note made Thiruvenkadar to realize the real life of human beings.

Thiruvenkadar as Pattinathar renounced everything and left the home, wearing only a kowpeenam. Before leaving, Pattinathar promised to his mother, that he will come back before she dies. In the mean time, his sister gave him an appam mixed with poison. When he came to know before eating, he threw the same on the roof of the house saying “Than vinai thannai chudum, ottappam veettai chudum - தன்வினை தன்னைச் சுடும்ஓட்டப்பம் வீட்டைச் சுடும்'. Immediately the roof was burnt out. This incidence made the people  to realize  that Pattinathar as a real saint.

When he was roaming place to place, worshiping Shiva, came to know his mother’s final stage arrived. He returned back to Kaveripoompattinam and did her last rites using wet banana/ plantain skins. He also sang a poem which made people to realize everybody’s mother’s sacrifice. The song goes like this….
