The visit to this Sri Yetteeswarar Temple at Mel Ayanambakkam was a part of Shiva Temples and Jain’s sculptures visit planned on 30th January 2022, after lifting the Covid 19, Sunday Lock down. Even though this temple was not included in the list, while searching the google map for the Mahaveerar Sculpture at Mel Ayanambakkam, This temple is on the next street of Mahavirar Sculpture, so decided to Visit this temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…The temple facing east with and entrance from the south. Stucco image of Shiva’s family is on the top of the south side entrance. Balipeedam and Rishabam are on the east side. A jala is provided to see the moolavar on the east side wall. Moolavar is of Swayambhu on a Square Avudayar. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar ( immediately after the entrance ), Chandikeswarar and a munivar’s jeeva Samadhi are in the prakaram. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi in Ardha mandapam facing south.
ARCHITECTUREThe sanctum sanctorum is very much similar to Tiruvaleeswarar Temple of Koyambedu, constructed with stone from adhisthana to prastram. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhisthana with jagathy and threepatta Kumuda. The Brahmakantha pilasters separates the Koshtams. There is no murtis in the koshtam. The prastaram is simple. No Vimana is above the sanctum sanctorum. Kumbha panjaras are also between koshtams.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSIt was told that the temple is more than 1000 years old, 10th to 12th Century Chozha period. There is no major renovations were done and the original temple is kept as it is, but completely white washed..
LEGENDSIt is believed that a Siddhar’s Jeeva Samadhi is in this temple, devotees prays him for his siddhi.
Lord Shiva of this temple is also called as Thirupranthakeswarar, which the legend is associated with the burning of Thiripuram with a single smile / laugh.
Devotees prays Lord Shiva and Ambal for Child boon and to relived from marriage obstacles.
