Mahadevar Temple, இடையார்பாக்கம் மகாதேவர் கோவில், Edayarpakkam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

We continued our journey through the paddy field bounds to Edayarpakkam. This is a continuation post to Koovam Temples Visit, happened on 13th October 2015. Considering easy access to this temple details, this temple is written & updated separately.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The temple is facing east and the temple tank thamarai kulam ( Lotus pond ) is in front of the temple. This temple is very small with a small sanctum sanctorum and ardha mandapam/ muka mandapam.

Rishabam and balipeedam are at front of the temple. There is beheaded Amman's statue and a separate head is in front of the sanctum sanctorum. People stated worships without knowing, who are they?. All the koshta images are in defaced condition. A Vinayagar is kept under a Bodhi tree. He is sitting on a padma peedam.

ARCHITECTURE

The total temple was built with stone from adhisthanam to Vimanam in Gajaprishta style. The super structure is missing above the 1st tier. The adhistanam is of simple pada bandha adhisthanam with jagathi, three patta kumuda and patti. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pancha tantra story reliefs are on the north side of upper portion / Valapi. ( strokes & tortoise, Monkey and crocodile, etc.,

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

This temple is under the control of Tamil Nadu State Archaeological Dept. As per the sign board, The temple is in apsidal style, was constructed during the reign of Chozha King Kulothunga Chozha–I ( 11^th Century AD ). According to inscriptions the Shiva was called as Jayangonda Chozha mandalathu manavir kottathu EdayaRRupakkam alias Raja Vidhyadhara Chathurvedi mangalathu Aludayar Thirupadhakadudaiyar Mahadevar and the village was called as Edayarpakkam alias Rajavidhyadhara Chathurvedi mangalam. The Inscription starts with “ஜயங்கொண்டசோழமண்டலத்து எடயாற்றுபாக்க...."

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s 37^th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by Arasur Kizhavan Velan Maduranthakan, for the same 90 goats / sheeps are gifted to this temple. The Goats are received by Pangi Poonjayan agreed to supply one ulakku ghee per day. Also this inscription records that this temple was constructed by Chandrasekaran ravi alias Cholenthara Singa Asaariyan, as per the order of the king Kulothunga Chozha-I.

ஜெயங்கொண்ட சோழ மண்டலத்து மனவிற் கோட்டத்துப் புரிசை நாட்டு புரிசை திருப்படக்காடுடைய மகாதேவர்க்கு ஒரு நந்தா விளக்கெரிக்க, இம்மண்டலத்து எயிற்கோட்டத்துக் கோநேரி நாட்டு கோநேரியைச் சார்ந்த அரசூர் கிழவன் வேளாந் மதுராந்தகன் என்பவனிடமிருந்து தொண்ணூற்று ஐந்து ஆடுகள் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு தினம் உழக்கு நெய்யினை தானும் தன்வற்கத்தாரும் அளக்க பங்கி புஞ்சையன் என்பான் உறுதியளித்துள்ளான். இக்கோயிலை சந்திரசேகரன் இரவி என்கிற சோளேந்திர சிங்க ஆசாரியன் என்பவன் முதலாம் குலோத்துங்கனின் ஆணையின் பேரில் எடுப்பித்தச் செய்தியினை இக்கல்வெட்டுக் கூறுவது சிறப்பாகும். இந்திய கல்வெட்டு ஆண்டறிக்கையில் ஆட்சியாண்டு 38 எனக் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால் கல்வெட்டில் தெளிவாக 37 என்றே உள்ளது.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s 13^th reign year inscription records the gift of land as thevadhanam by Arur Udayan Vaidhyanathan Thiruchitrambalam Udaiyan.

சோழ மண்டலத்து நித்தவிநோத வளநாட்டுக் கிழார் கூற்றத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஆரூர் உடையான் வைத்தியநாதன் திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் உடையான் என்பவன் திருப்படக்காடுடைய மகாதேவர்க்கு இவ்வூரார் வசம் நிலம் ஒன்றினை வாங்கித் தேவதானமாக அளித்துள்ளான்.

Kulothunga Chozha –II’s 12^th reign year inscription records endowment of burning a ¾ Perpetual lamp by Arulalapattan’s daughter Andamai Chani, a Brahmin Lady . For the same a land was purchased for 30 Kasu and gifted to the Villagers.

ஜெயங்கொண்ட சோழ மண்டலத்து மணவிற் கோட்டத்து புரிசை நாட்டு இடையாற்றுபாக்கம் என்னும் ராஜவிச்சாதிர சதுர்வேதிமங்கலத்து இறைவன் திருப்படக்காடுடையார்க்கு விளக்கு வைக்க, இவ்வூரைச் சார்ந்த அருளாளபட்டன் மகள் ஆண்டமைச் சாநி என்கிற பிராமணப் பெண் முப்பது காசுகள் புரிசை ஊரார் வசம் கொடுத்து, நிலம் ஒன்றினை வாங்கி திருநந்தா விளக்குப் பட்டியாக அளித்து விளக்கெரிக்க தானமளித்துள்ளாள்.

Rajathi Rajan’s 11^th reign year inscription records that, the land gifted by by Andamai Chani for burning the ¾ Perpetual lamp was stopped due to the land was cultivated. So the Villagers arranged to gift cows are gifted for burning the perpetual lamp after taking back the land. ( please refer the previous inscription ).

இடையாற்றுப்பாக்கமான இராஜவிஜாதிர சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்தைச் சார்ந்த அருளாளபட்டன் மகள் ஆண்டமை சானி என்பவள் திருபடக் காடுடைய மகாதேவர்க்கு இக்கோயில் தேவதான நிலம் ஒரு வேலி நிலம் புரிசை ஊராரிடம் வாங்கி திருநந்தா விளக்கு பட்டியாக இவள் ஏற்கனவே அளித்த நிலம் யாரும் பயிர் செய்யாமல் கிடந்ததால், இவ்விளக்கு எரியாமல் நின்றுபோனது. இந்த நிலத்தினை ஊராரே பெற்றுக்கொண்டு ¾ திருநொந்தா விளக்கு வைக்க பசுக்கள் அளிக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்யப் பட்டுள்ளது. இப்பெண் இரண்டாம் குலோத்துங்கனின் 12-ஆம் ஆட்சி யாண்டில் (கி.பி. 1145) இவ்விளக்கினை வைக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்யப் பட்டுள்ளதை முந்தையக் கல்வெட்டுத் தெரிவிக்கிறது.
