LEGENDS
Lord Shiva hide the sword of Arjunan in the tree hole and gave back, hence this place is called as – Vaal-Oli-Puthur= Vaalkolipputhur. Mahavishnu worshiped Diamond Lingam of this temple.

As per the Legend, Asuras and Devas churned the Thiruparkadal to get the nectar / Amrita. They used meru hill as maththu and Vasuki as rope. At one point unbearable the pain Vasuki spat its venom, which was consumed by Lord Shiva and has become Thiruneela Kandar. Vasuki felt guilty and came to this temple and prayed  for pardon, get rid of the sin and regain the strength. Vasuki lived in one of the Putru under a Vakai tree hence this place was called as Puthur. Lord Shiva blessed Vasuki and used as his ornament.

In another legend, Pancha Pandavas during their exile, came to this place. Arjuna was felt thirsty. Lord Shiva came in the form of an old Man and gave him a stick, to strike on the ground, to get water. Arjuna gave his sword to the old man and went for striking on the ground. When Arjuna returned back and found the old man was missing. When searched, he found his sword in the hole of the tree and a Shiva Linga. Arjuna realised that the old man is none other than Lord Shiva. Due to this this place was called as Val + Oli + Puthur- adding the Thiru, Thiruvaloilputhur
