LEGENDS
During ancient times, this place was called as Palasavanam, Parasarapuram, Brahmapuri, Agnipuram, Kamsapuram and Mukthipuri. Manarkancha Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars and the Harathaththa Sivachariyar who was known for holiness of panchatchara are born in this place and Kalikama Nayanar married here.

As per the sthala purana Sukran is staunch devotee  of Lord Shiva came to this place and worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Hence this place obtained the name as Kanjanur. Those are affected by mental problem, amnesia Worshiped Lord shiva of this temple to get cured. Those are suffering from the adverse effect of Shukra may do parikara in this temple.

This Legend is associated with Haridathathar Sivachariyar. He was born in a Vaishnava family and was named as Sudharsanar. He had done many miracles during his life. Even though born is Vaishnava family, he was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. The Villagers asked him to prove Shiva as Paramporul by sitting an heated steel chair. He accepted the challenge and proved that “ the Lord Shiva is the supreme deity and life force behind everything on this earth”. On seeing this, some of vaishnavites also followed Saivam.

In another Haridathathar legend, A Brahmin dropped the grass bundle inadvertently killed the calf of the Cow. The other Brahmins scold him for this and the dosha. Haridathathar asked him to chant Namasivaya to get rid of the sin. Since other Brahmins didn’t believed this, asked to feed the grass to the Rishabam. When the Brahmin offered, the stone Nandhi / Rishabam ate the grass. Rishaba’s tongue will not be protruding out side.

The other legend is associated with a farmer who offered Suraikai to Lord Shiva. The farmer used to sell the vegetables grown in his farm. On that day  od Shiva came for food, all the vegetables were sold out except a Suraikai with seed. He thought it can be used as a seed to grow. Lord Shiva came in the form of a old Brahmin. The Farmer thought that the Suraikai is not suitable for Devotees to offer. Lord Shiva in his dream told that half portion for food and half to be used as seed.
