Sri Ona Kantheeswarar Temple / Ona Kanthan Thali / ஒனகாந்தன் தளி / ஓன காந்தீஸ்வரர் கோயில், Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.

This Sri Ona Kantheswarar Temple is in Panchupettai a part of Kanchipuram. This the 3rd Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam of Thondai Nadu.  Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

      நெய்யும் பாலுந் தயிருங் கொண்டு
                                நித்தல் பூசனை செய்ய லுற்றார்
      கையி லொன்றுங் காண மில்லைக்
                                கழல டிதொழு துய்யி னல்லால்
      ஐவர் கொண்டிங் காட்ட வாடி
                                ஆழ்கு ழிப்பட் டழுந்து வேனுக்
      குய்யு மாறொன் றருளிச் செய்யீர்
                                ஓண காந்தன் தளியு ளீரே.

Moolavar  : Sri Oneswarar, Kantheswarar and Jalandareswara.

Some of the important features of this temple are.....
There is a small three tier Rajagopuram with Rishabam and Balipedam on the east side with out Dwajasthambam. There are three Shiva Shrines in this complex with moolavars as Swayambu.

The main shrine is for Sri Oneswarar. The entrance to moolavar sannadhi is small with Stucco Dwarapalakas on both side. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Vishnu Durgai. Oneswarar is of swayambu and big in size with irregular surface  with vibhuthi pattai alangaram looks cute. Somaskandar image is on the back side wall of the sanctum sanctorum.

In the outer prakaram Sannadhi for Vayiruthari Pillayar, Omkara Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar ( Kumara Velan ), Sapta nagakanniyas, Bhairavar, Navagrahas, Suryan, Agora Veerabhadra and Sandikeswarar. Naalvar is in the front mandapam. The second Sri Kantheswarar is in a separate shrine  with balipedam and Rishabam, but, with out any Koshta images is also in the prakaram.  

The third Shrine is the Jalanthareswara Sannadhi with separate balipedam, Rishabam and small single tier Rajagopuram. There is an inter connecting door from Onakanthan Thali Temple. There is a separate entrance with a single tier Rajagopuram.  There is no Koshta images in this temple also. Sri Jalanthareswarar was worshiped by Jalantharan

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple was existed before pallava period and re-built  by the pallavas and latter Vijayanagaras. There is inscription found in this temple. The temple was again reconstructed by the Vijayanagars during 16th to 17th Century. 

The  18th Century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamikal had written the sthalapurana of  Onan, Kanthan and Jalandran worshiped shiva temples in his Kanchipuram.

41. சலந்தேரசப் படலம் (1471 - 1493)
1471     ஓணனார்க் கரியவர் ஓணகாந் தன்தளி
        நீணகர் மேன்மையத் தெரிந்தவா நிகழ்த்தினாம்
        மாணமர் காட்சிசால் மற்றதன் வடதிசைப்
        பேணிய சலந்தேர சத்தியல் பேசுவாம்.
   ஓணனார் – திருவோண நட்சத்திரத்துக்கு உரிய திருமால்

LEGEND:
Vanasura’s captains Onan and Kanthan and Jalandaran, who came out of Lord Shiva’s eyes also worshiped Lord shiva of this temple. Hence the three Shiva  sannadhis are after their name. When Sundarar sung hymns, Lord Shiva  transforms Tamarind fruits  in to Gold to built this temple.

The temple Sivachariyar calls himself as Siddhar and he tells kuri குறி சொல்லுதல் ) ( about the person and future happenings - like astrology ). It is interesting to  hear and note the history of the temple through his actions.

Apart from regular poojas, Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham are celebrated in a grand manner.

The temple is very near to Panchupettai electrical substation part of Kanchipuram and a KM from Sri Ekambareswarar temple and 2 KM from Railway station. 
Can be reached through an auto from Sri Ekambareswarar temple.
The temple is about 1.6 KM from Kanchipuram Railway Station,  30 KM from arakkonam Railway Junction and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
