Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram Shiva Temples Visit- 1

The visit to this Sri Panamudeeswarar Temple, at Kanchipuram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. We started our visit from this temple. The temple is located on Vallal Pachiappan St, which was called as Iyyangar St. since Iyyangars/Vaishnava Brahmins lived in the street. It is believed that snake worshiped Lord Panaathareeswarar which turned to Panamudeeswarar.
The 18th Century Sri Sivagnana Swamikal had written the sthalapurana of this temple in Kanchipuranam under Panathesara padalam and the same is reproduced as given below.....

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple is facing east with a two tier Rajagopuram, spread over 25 cents area land. Balipedam and Nandhi are in front of the temple. Urchavars, Raghu and Kethu Lingas are in the arthamandapam. There is no separate sannadhi for Ambal, but Yoga Sakthi Amman in the form of procession deity is in the sanctum. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai ( A new Durga was installed in front of the old murti )are in the koshtam. Koshta murtis are made of sand stone. Since sand stones murtis are eroded heavily due to age, lime plastering was done.
In Mandapam Sannadhi for Natarajar, Sri Sidheeswarar, Vara Siddhi Vinayagar, Kalahastheeswarar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Shaniswar, Vishnu, Bhairavar and Suryan. As per TN Govt HR&CE Book sannadhis for Karpaga Vinayagar ( in 1994 Vinayagar was called as Alamkatha Vinayagar ), Athipatheeswarar, Vikadachakra Vinayagar, Virupatcheeswarar, Aladi Pillayar are in the temple.
ARCHITECTURE:
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapam and a maha mandapam. The entrance to the sanctum is on the south side. The sanctum sanctorum was built on a simple padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda. The structure above the adhisthana was built with brick. A 2 tier Vesara Vimana is above the prastaram. The prastharam is of kapotha style.
The sanctum sanctorum is now supported with inclined brick structure, to avoid further damage to the original structure.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
The original sand stone temple was built by Sundara Chozha during 10th Century and mandapas are extended latter. As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as "Padamudaya Nayanar".
In 2005 renovation works are started and Kumbhabhishekam was conducted. As per HR& CE’s 1990s report income of this temple was Rs 300.00.
LEGEND
This temple is Raghu & Kethu Parikara sthalam. It is believed that the Raghu and Kethu Lingas will turned in to snakes during night time and guards the temple. They installed and worshiped Lord Shiva to save from Kite ( Garuda – A Sacred bird ). Lord Shiva wears serpents and the song written by Kannadasan "Garuda Saukyama" arose from this legend.
TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept opened between 06.30 hrs to 10.30 hrs and 17.30 hrs to 19.30 Hrs.
HOW TO REACH:
This temple is on Vallal Pachaiyappan St / Uthiramerur road.
The temple is about 2 Km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 3.5 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 30 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
