The visit to this Balasubramanya Swamy Temple, Ilayanar Velur was not a part of Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit on the banks of river Cheyyar / Palar, scheduled on 15th March 2020. After Thirumalai Samy Temple’s visit, on the way to Chennai we came across this place and found the temple was kept open. Ilayanar Velur is on the banks of river Cheyyar a tributary to river Palar. The 15^th Century Arunagirinathar has sung hymn on Murugan of this temple. Lord Muruga as - Young - boy destroyed Demons through - Vel – hence this place is being called as – Ilayanar + Vel, which has got corrupted as Ilayanar Velur.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipedam, Dwajasthambam and Elephant vahana are after the Rajagopuram.Stucco images of Sri Subramanya Swamy’s leelas are on the three sides of mukhamandapa. A Vinayagar and stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of arthamandapa. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Jeeva Samadhi of ( Gnana Siddhar ) Sri Swamy Natha Siddhar ( அருள்மிகு தெய்வீக ஞானசித்தர் சுவாமிநாதசுவாமி அருள்பீடம் இளையனார் வேலூர் ) with Vinayagar & Chandran ( an ardent devotee of Sri Subramanya Swamy who attained jeeva Samadhi in this temple. Hence 1^st Naivedyam is offered to this Siddhar before Sri Subramanya Swamy. On Ipasi month pournami day Annabhishekam will be done in grand manner ), Oonjal and Vasantha mandapam are in the outer prakaram. Moolavar Sri Murugan as Balasubramanya Swamy is about 6 feet with Vel, Cock flag and Peacock at his feet. The urchavar is in abhaya & Varadha hastam.

The Consort of Lord Muruga is the combination of Sri Valli and Devasena called Gajavalli. The sannadhi is on the left side of Moolavar Sannadhi. In the inner prakaram, Ekambaranathar, Ekam Perundandam Udayar, Maha Thiripura Sundari, Kasi Viswanathar Santhana Ganapathi, Sumithirai Sandikeswarar and the Vel on the North west corner.

LEGEND

The legend of Sri Prathigengeeswarar Temple of Neyyadupakkam is also applicable to this temple also with little change. As per the Legend Kashyapa Maharishi did penance on Lord Shiva to destroy the demons Malayan and Magaran, who gave frequent trouble for his penance. Lord Shiva came out of pathala lok and gave dharshan to Kashyapa maharishi. Lord Shiva gave the Vel / spear to Lord Muruga to destroy the demons. Murugan throw the Vel on the demons and destroyed them. The temple is located, where the vel killed the demons and rested on the ground. Hence it is told that depth of the Vel, below the ground is not known to anybody.

The devotees worships Lord Subramanya Swamy for Child boon, to get relieved from debt, loss in the business, to get relieved from the enemies, etc,. As a part of thanks giving devotees used to bring Pal kavadi, Panner kavadi and Pushpa pallakku.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS.

Since 15^th Century Arunagiri Nathar has sung hymns on Lord Subramanyar of this temple, the temple might be existed before 15^th Century and may belongs 14^th to 15^th century. Recent period inscriptions are found in side the temple.

CELEBRATIONS:

Chiththirai Thiruvizha with car / chariot procession ( 109^th bramotchavam was conducted in 2016 ), Thepporchavam in January, Laksharchana in Masi month, Vaikasi Vasantha Urchavam, Avani Pavithra Urchavam, Puratasi Gajavalli Urchavam, Panguni Uthiram, Ipasi Kantha Shasti, are celebrated in a grand manner.
