Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 6

21^st February 2020.

The visit to this Sri Veda Vanneeswarar, at Sadhavaram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. The temple is on the south side of Punniya Koteeswarar temple and on the Punniya Koteeswarar Koil st (  on the banks of river Vegavathi- Now as a sewerage channel ?).

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchipuranam. ( Also doubt that the following is sthala purana may not be directly applicable to this temple, but the story may be applied to all Vanneeswarar Temples ).The same is reproduced as given below...

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram.  Balipeedam and Nandhi are in the mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Shiva with Parvati  as rishabaroodar on the top of the artha mandapam.  In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durgai.  There is no separate sannadhi for Ambal Mangalanayagi.

In prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramanitar, Nagars under peepal tree, Naalvar, Chandikeswarar and Navagrahas.

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum antarala and artha mandapam. On the Vimana Stucco image of Natarajar is in place of Dakshinamurthy  and Kalinga Narthanar in place of Vishnu.

The temple will be kept opened between 08.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs

This temple is on the Punniya Koteeswarar Koil St about 500 meters from Kanchipuram – Chengalpattu main Road. .    

The temple is about 3.5 KM from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 5.0 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 42.5 KM from Arakkonam and 73 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.

The visit to this Sri Periya Thambiran Eswarar Temple, at Thenambakkam was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. The temple is on Military road in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thenambakkam. This is a unique temple in which moolavar and Consort are not in the form of Shiva Linga.

Consort   : Sri Tripura Sundari

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The temple is facing east with balipeedam and Nandhi. In the sanctum Shiva is sitting on Nandhi and Parvati is sitting on Simha vahana. Vishwakarma, Ambal Tripura Sundari. One the opposite is a male god with two Consorts are in sitting Posture.  The temple consists of Sanctum, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. Sri Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of artha mandapam. There is no vimana over the sanctum. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati is on the top of   mukha mandapam.

Moolavar : Sri Veda Vanneeswarar

Veda Vanneeswarar temple is on the south Side of Thambiran Eswaran Temple. This temple consists of Sanctum and artha mandapam. Durgai and Dakshinamurthy are in the artha mandapam. There is no Vimana over the sanctum sanctorum. Nagars, Raghu and Kethu are on a platform. Navagrahas are in the praharam.

HISTORY.

It is believed that the Veda Vanneeswarar temple is about 1500 Years old.

The earliest history of the Thambiran Eswaran temple is not known. As per the inscriptions this temple was under the control of  Vishwakarma Trust since 1866 CE latter trustee are changed in 1904, 1980, 1995 and the Trust was renamed as Vishwakarma Mahasabha and the same was registered in 2012.  The Chakkarathalwar temple also came in to the control of this trust.

Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 4

21st February 2020.

The visit to this Sri Agatheeswarar Temple, at Orikkai was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. This Village Orikkai is on the Kanchipuram to Uthiramerur main Road, on the northern banks of River Palar. It is believed that this place was named after the Vishu Temple and Vishnu is called as  “Or Iravu Tangi Irunda Perumal - ஓர் இரவு தங்கி இருந்த பெருமாள்” ( Perumal who stayed here for one night ), which has got corrupted to Orikkai. The transformation might have taken like this ஓர் இரவு இருக்கை –ஓரிருக்கை – ஒரிக்கை – Or iravu Irukkai – Orirukkai – Orikkai. This is one of the Villages, where Maha Periyava used to visit, especially during Chaturmasya viratham, first worship Sri Agastheeswarar and will go to camp.

The 18^th Century Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the sthala purana of various temples which includes Agathiyecharam, in Kanchipuranam under Panathesara padalam. Don’t know, whether this is the one or not. Since Sage Agasthiyar is common  added for this temple also. The same is reproduced as given below.....

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The is a very small temple with a flat arch entrance from south side. Balipeedam and Nandhi are in the Mukha Mandapam. Vinayagar is in the artha mandapam. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati is on the top of the Mukha mandapam. At the entrance of artha mandapam on the left a Padam ( May be Maha Periyava ? ) and on the right Agasthya Muni. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum and an artha mandapam. A Vesara Vimana is above the sanctum. Chandikeswarar is in the prakaram.

In prakaram there is an Amman temple. The Goddess may be Kali with jwala makudam. Amman is in sitting posture. A saptakanni’s panel is at the base of Amman’s pedestal. At the entrance of the sanctum, on both sides are two female dwarf Dwarapalakis. Simham and balipeedam are in the mandapam.       

HISTORY.

It is believed that the original temple with Shiva Linga belongs to 7^th to 8^th Century Pallava Period. Might have been reconstructed latter and the details are not known. During Maha Periyava’s visit the temple was in bad shape and asked the locals to reconstruct the same.

With Sri Sankarenthira Saraswati Swamikal’s blessings the temple was reconstructed and Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 07th July 2014. The reconstruction was done under the Leadership of one Mr Subramaniyan, who left his bank job exclusively for this purpose. The required fund for the reconstruction was raised through Public and locals.

LEGEND:

It is believed that the Shiva Linga was installed and worshiped  by the Sage Agasthiyar, on his way to South to balance the earth.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted the opening and closing time are unpredictable.

The visit to this Sri Kailasanathar Temple, at Sevilimedu was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. There are 4 Shiva temples at Sevilimedu of which, the three ie West, Uthira and Dakshina Kailasanathar temples are in a single complex on the banks of Sevilimedu Lake. The 4^th one called Kizhakku Kailasanathar temple is in the midst of the Village. The Place was called as Shiva Linga medu, which has got corrupted to the present name of Sevilimedu.

The temple is facing east with an entrance single tier Rajagopuram on south. Balipeedam and Nandhi are in front of sanctum sanctorum. In Sanctum sanctorum Moolavar is of 16 fluted facets/Dhara Lingam and Somaskandar is on the back. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durga. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam and maha mandapam. Procession deities are in the artha mandapam. 

In Prakaram Navasakthi Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Under a tree Nagar, Adhi Kailasanathar, Swayambu Lingeswarar & Kasi Viswanathar, Navagrahas and Bhairavar.    

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Many years before the locals found out a stone temple with 16 fluted facets as Dhara Linga in the midst of thorny bushes & trees. Under the guidance of Maha Periyava locals cleared bushes around the temple and started worship as East Kailasanathar, since already 3 Kailasanathar temples are there on the banks of Sevilimedu lake.

The Original temple was built during Pallava period and latter the temple was renovated during Chozha period. The temple walls and adhishtanam has the Pallava and Chozha inscriptions.   

LEGEND:

As per the legend, in the process of distribution of “Amrita” churned from the milk ocean, to the Devas, the Demon Swarnabanu took the form of a Deva standing in between Suryan and Chandran, received and drank. When this was complained by Suryan and Chandran, Vishnu chopped the head of Swarnabanu. Since the demon drank the amirth, the head transformed with snake tail and the body had transformed with Snake hood. To get rid of this they came to earth, created a pond and worshiped lord Shiva. Pleased by their devotion Lord Shiva gave them the position of Raghu and Kethu. Hence this temple is called as Raghu, Ketu and also a pitru dosha Nivarthi sthalam.

The temple will be kept opened between 09.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs

This temple is off Military Road in the midst of Village.  

The temple is about 4.2 Km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 5.7 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 40 KM from Arakkonam and 77 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
