SRI AADHIKESAVA PERUMAL TEMPLE, KAVATHUR / KAVADUR IN CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started with Mr Kesavan to the Shiva and Vishnu temples from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, near Changalpattu. This Vishnu temple is one of the lesser known temple at Kavathur / Kavadur, on the banks of river Kiliyar which starts from Maduranthakam Lake and joins with Palar River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a deepa sthambam  and 3 tier Rajagopuram. The Rajagopuram inside is with a small mandapam. Balipedam and Garudan are after the Rajagopuram. In sanctum moolavar Sri Aadhikesava Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. There is no Koshta images.  Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of arthamandapam. Vahanas for utsavam are in the Mukha mandapam.

Stucco image of Sri Aadhikesava Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi is on the top of the parapet wall of the mukha mandapam. There is also a mandapam on the left side of the sanctum sanctorum. In prakaram madapalli, Sri Ambujavalli Thayar and Andal.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapam and a mukha mandapam.  The adhisthana is padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda.  An Ekathala vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. The main temple was constructed during Pandya period and further expanded during Vijayanagara period.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscriptions the temple may belongs to 12th  to 13th Century Pandya period, side mandapa and mukha was built during Vijayanagara Nayak period.  The adhisthana has the Pandya and Vijayanagara period inscriptions. An inscription is Telegu also.   The Maravarman Sundara Pandyan’s ( 1216 to 1238 CE ) period inscription records the gift to this temple.

The temple was reconstructed in 2019 and Rajagopuram was also built.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 09.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH:
The Bus routes from T6, T10, T4 and Kumaran bus service from Thachur koot road passes through Devadur  from there the temple is about a KM.
The temple is 12 KM from Maduranthakam, 30 KM from Chengalpattu and 90 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station is  Chengalpattu.
