VAALEESWARAR TEMPLE / THIRUVAALEESWARAR TEMPLE, KOOVATHUR, CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started the temples Visit along with Mr Kesavan, from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, in Changalpattu District. Koovathur was our last stop to visit both Vishnu  and Shiva Temples.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. The temple tank with lotus flowers is in front of the temple.  Balipedam, Dwajasthambam and Nandhi are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are in the arthamandapam. Moolavar is in the sanctum and in koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.  

In prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Ambal Sannadhi, Chandran, Suryan, Shaniswarar, Bhairavar and Chandikeswarar. Ambal sannadhi is in the mukha mandapam facing south.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapam and Mahamandapam. The temple was reconstructed during recent years. Granite tiles are paved in the prakaram.

HISTORY & INSCRIPTION
The word Koovam in Tamil means well. Since the 8 Holy rivers took form of Wells, this place is called a Koovathur. It was told that the temple is more than 1000 years old and there is no inscription or evidence available in the temple. The temple might have been built along with Adhi Kesava Perumal Temple, during 15th to 16th Century, Vijayanagara period.

LEGEND
As per the legend Vaali /Vali  killed demon Mayavi after fighting 28 months in a cave. So he has got the brahmahathi dosha. To get rid of dosha, Vaali worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

SRI AADHIKESAVA PERUMAL TEMPLE, KAVATHUR / KAVADUR IN CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started with Mr Kesavan to the Shiva and Vishnu temples from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, near Changalpattu. This Vishnu temple is one of the lesser known temple at Kavathur / Kavadur, on the banks of river Kiliyar which starts from Maduranthakam Lake and joins with Palar River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a deepa sthambam  and 3 tier Rajagopuram. The Rajagopuram inside is with a small mandapam. Balipedam and Garudan are after the Rajagopuram. In sanctum moolavar Sri Aadhikesava Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. There is no Koshta images.  Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of arthamandapam. Vahanas for utsavam are in the Mukha mandapam.

Stucco image of Sri Aadhikesava Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi is on the top of the parapet wall of the mukha mandapam. There is also a mandapam on the left side of the sanctum sanctorum. In prakaram madapalli, Sri Ambujavalli Thayar and Andal.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapam and a mukha mandapam.  The adhisthana is padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda.  An Ekathala vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. The main temple was constructed during Pandya period and further expanded during Vijayanagara period.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscriptions the temple may belongs to 12th  to 13th Century Pandya period, side mandapa and mukha was built during Vijayanagara Nayak period.  The adhisthana has the Pandya and Vijayanagara period inscriptions. An inscription is Telegu also.   The Maravarman Sundara Pandyan’s ( 1216 to 1238 CE ) period inscription records the gift to this temple.

The temple was reconstructed in 2019 and Rajagopuram was also built.

SRI KUNTHEESWARAR TEMPLE AT PERIAVELIKADU / VELIKKADU, CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started the temples Visit from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, near Changalpattu. This is one of the Shiva temple waiting for some one to take care off. Even after the palalayam the renovation works are yet to begin.  It is believed that the epic Mahabharat character Kunti Devi, during Panchapandavas exile worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing east with a Rajagopuram base.  Balipedam and Nandhi are in front of Mukha mandapam.   During 1960 CE, Walls are raised in the mukha mandapa for the Vinayagar and Valli Devasena Subramaniyar.  Also loose sculptures of Shiva Lngam, Ambal, Dhandayuthapani, Suryan, Bhairavar are in the mukha mandapam. Koshtas and Sandikeswara sannadhi are empty now.
The temple was renovated about 50 to 60 years before and the inscriptions are found on the mukha mandapa ceiling.  Solar and Lunar eclipse are shown in the form of reliefs on the ceiling.  Ambal is in a separate sannadhi facing south.

Even-though the  temple is claimed to be more than 1000 years old, might have been constructed during Vijayanagara period.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple was built with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, arthamandapam with bricks. The arthamandapa is supported with stone pillars of square & octagonal are with vettu pothyals. The sanctum sanctorum was built on a stone base ie up to jagathi and brick construction was started from Kumuda. The prastharam is of kapotha style  with mathalam in the valabi.

PRESENT CONDITION
The temple is now in dilapidated condition. The sanctum with arthamandapam are kept locked for safety reasons. The tree roots damaged the Vimana extensively.  But still,  even at the age of 90+ years Gurukkal Chandramouli does the pooja sincerely.  Pradoshams are also conducted.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:
Since there is no fixed time, the Grukkal Chandramouli, who is staying near the temple may be called for pooja.

The temple is about 16.5 KM from Maduranthakam, 26.3 KM from Kalpakkam, 40 KM from Chengalpattu and 100 KM from Chennai.

SRI SONACHALESWARAR TEMPLE, MULLI, MADURANTHAKAM, CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started the temples Visit from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, near Changalpattu. This place Mulli is on the banks of river Kiliyar which starts from Maduranthakam Lake and joins with Palar River.

Consort   : Sri Parvati

Some of the salient features of this temple are.
The temple is facing east. Balipedam and Nandhi are in front, under the newly built mandapa. The Moolavar Shiva Linga is in the sanctum sanctorum and Ambal is in arthamandapa. There is no koshtam and Vimana.

The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda. Only the adhisthana was built with stone. The wall and prastharam are built with bricks.

HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS
The temple is believed to constructed during 10th to 11th Century CE. Chozha period inscriptions are found on the adhisthana kumuda and jagathi.  The inscriptions belongs to Kulothunga -I (1070 - 1122 CE ) and Kulothunga-II ( 1133 - 1150 CE ). Kulothunga -II, inscription starts with his meikeerthi poomeevi valara ( பூமேவி வளர.... ). The inscription speaks about gift of  with its periphery limits. 

The temple is maintained in the original form and there is no major renovation has been carried out.

KAMALA VARADHARAJAR TEMPLE ( AKA ) SUNDARA MAHALAKSHMI TEMPLE, ARASAR KOIL, CHENGALPATTU DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

 19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started the temples Visit along with Mr Kesavan, a Heritage enthusiast, from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar river, near Changalpattu. Our first stop was at Arasar Koil Vishnu Temple called as Sundara Mahalakshmi Temple and this is one of the temple where Thayar is considered as more powerful than the presiding deity Sri Kamala Varadharaja Perumal.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing west with an entrance arch without any stucco images. Balipedam, Dwajasthamba base and Garudan are immediately after the entrance arch. In the sanctum Moolavar Sri Kamala Varadharajar is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. There is no images in the koshtas. Sri Kamala Varadhararajar is in standing posture, holding a lotus flower in his right hand and right hand is on gatha.

In the prakaram Thayar and Andal Sannadhi and both are facing east. Perundevi Thayar is sitting in padmasana posture and both hand are in abhaya hastham. She has six toes in her right foot.   

ARCHITECTURE
The temple was in dilapidated condition and the same was reconstructed after 2006. The temple was reconstructed in recent years and do not know how it was. The main sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapam, mahamandapam and a mukha mandapam.  A two tier Nagara vimana is on the sanctum. The adhisthanam is of padabandha adhisthana with tripatta kumuda. The prastharam is of kapotha style with nasi koods. Padmam is in the Valabi. In bhoomidesam yazhi vari ( Vyazha vari ). Vishnu’s avathara stucco images are on the parapet walls of the mandapa. Stucco image of Vishnu with his consorts on both sides are  Garudan and Anjaneyar are at the front fascia of Mukhamandapam.
Thayar Sanctum Sanctorum consists of sanctum and a mukhamandapam. Mukhamandapa was supported with Simha musical pillars pillars ( musical notes will come when tapped the pillars). The adhisthana is of padabandha adhisthana with vrutha kumuda.  The pratharam is of kapotha style with nasikood. Vyazhavari is in the bhoomidesam.  A Vesara vimana is on the sanctum. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
The main temple was believed to be constructed during Chozha period and latter it had received contributions from Pandyas and Vijayanagaras.  As per the inscriptions this place was donated to Brahmins who are experts of 4 Vedas, called ChaturvediMangalam.  This place was a part of this Chaturvedimangalam called as Mathur Pidagai and Perumal was called as Thiruvarasura Nayanar. The place was named after Perumal as Arasar Koil.  

The temple may belongs to 12th Century. The temple has Chozha period Rajaraja-III ( 1216 to 1250 CE ), Pandya Period Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan ( 1259 CE ), Sundara Pandyan –II ( 1291 CE )  and latter Vijayanagara period  Inscriptions.  The inscriptions mainly records the gift of Cows with calves, Lands, sale of Lands  etc, for burning  perpetual lamps / Nandha vilakku and Poojas. 

The Rajarajan-III ( 1237 CE ) period inscription records the gift of land after getting 12 Kasus to this temple towards poojas. During Chozha period this place & Perumal was called as Jayangonda Chozhamandalathu Thaniyur Sri Mathuranthaka Chathurvedimangalathu  Vadapidagai Mathur Oor Thiruvarasuram Perumal 

Sri  Sundara Pandyan (1259 CE ) period 3 line inscription inscribed on the north side kumuda, records that, when the payment of Taxes by Vamana Pattan defaulted and ran away, the persons signed as surety paid after selling the land to this temple sabha.  The is reproduced as below….

[இரு]பத்தேழும் விலையாவதாகவும்இப்படி சம்மதித்து மாத்தூர் []ழுவாத நா[]னார்க்கு ஸ்ரீவேதநாயகனும் இவற்கு விலை ஆக விற்றுக் குடுத்தோம் மாத்தூர் ஸபை ஊரோம்இப்படிக்கு இவை _ _ _ ஞ்சி இவாய்வ _ _ _ _ன் பட்டன் எழுத்துஇப்படிக்கு இவை வங்கிப்புறத்து திருவேங்கட பட்டன் எழுத்துஇப்படிக்கு இவை ஆதன்பாக்கத்து திருவேங்கட பட்டன் எழுத்துஇவர்கள் சொல்ல இப்ரமாணம் எழுதினேன் ஸ்ரீ சுத்தவல்லிச் சருப்பேதி மங்கலத்து உய்ய வந்த பெருமாள் கோயில் வீற்றிருந்தான் பட்டனேன்இவை என் எழுத்து.

Another Sadyavarman Sundara Pandyan’s ( 1259 CE ) inscription records the gift of land which include trees and wells purchased for 40 panam towards daily naivedyam.  The periphery limits of the land are also mentioned.  

It was believed that Sathguru Venkataraman was the instrumental for reconstruction of this temple in 2006 CE, when it was in dilapidated condition.

LEGEND
As per the legend Brahma performed penance at this place and in response Vishnu as Kamala Varadharajar with Sridevi and Bhudevi appeared and blessed. In another legend, during the process of collecting earth to make Perumal for Kanchipuram by Brahma, the idols of Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi are unearthed.  Hence this temple is considered as older than Varadharajar temple of Kanchipuram.

Thayar has got 6 toes on her right leg, the number 6 belongs to Sukhran and this is a parikara sthalam for Sukhran. Thayar is believed to be the controller of Sukra, 64 form of wealth / Iswaryas and devotees worships Thayar on Varalakshmi Vrata day and Fridays.

The Nava Grahas with their consorts worshiped Thayar  considering  as 9 forms as Adi Lakshmi ( Aditya – Sun – Sooryan ), Soma Lakshmi ( Chandran ), Mangala Lakshmi ( Chevvai ), Bhowmya Lakshmi in the root form of Sri Vidya Lakshmi ( Bhudan ), Gurupara Lakshmi ( Guru - Viyazhan ), Shukra Lakshmi ( Shukran – Velli ) and Bhagya Lakshmi  or Sumangali Vara Lakshmi ( Shani ).

Devotees also worships Gomukh considering as Kubera Gomukh by applying turmeric paste and Kungum(am). It is believed that with the blessings of Thayar one can get relieved from poverty, Debts, Losses in business, Court Cases and other litigation problems.
