TIRTHANKARA AND THATHANGI / KAMAN FESTIVAL CELEBRATION AT PERUMANAM, THIRUVANNAMALAI – A THIRUVANNAMALAI HERITAGE WALK.

30^th December 2018.

This Tirthankara visit at Perumanam near Thiruvannamalai was organized by the Thiruvannamalai District Center for  Historical Research on 30^th December 2018. The  Sangam literatures  & Silapathikaram mentioned Kaman worship is being followed till date in Thenpennai & Thurinjalaaru banks Villages  of  Thiruvannamalai area as Thathangi. This festival is celebrated 3 days after the Thai Pongal and extends up to 18 days.

TIRTHANKARA

The Tirthankara statue is in the middle of the Village Perumanam. The Tirthankara is in sitting posture. Mukkudai, Samaratharis and prabai are shown. A pillow or thindu/pillow is shown on back side of the Tirthankara. The face is found defaced. Comparing with the Kazhukumalai Tirthankara statues, this Tirthankara Statue may belongs to 8^th to 9^th Century.

திருவண்ணாமலை பகுதி பெருமணத்தில் உள்ள தீர்தங்கரர் சிற்பத்தைக் காண டிசம்பர் 30ந்தேதி திருவண்ணாமலை மாவட்ட வரலாற்று ஆய்வு நடுவம் ஏற்பாடு செய்து இருந்தது. அந்த தீர்த்தங்கரர் சிற்பம் அமர்ந்த நிலையில் மேலே முக்குடை, இருபுறமும் சாமரதாரிகள், தலையின் பின்புறம் பிரபை, மற்றும் முதுகுக்கு பின் பகுதியில் ஒரு திண்டு போன்ற அமைப்பும் காட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. முகம் சிதைந்தநிலையில் காணப்பட்டது. கழுகுமலை சமண சிற்பங்களை ஒப்பிட்டு நோக்குங்கால் இந்த தீர்த்தங்கரர் 8 முதல் 9ஆம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்ததாக இருக்கலாம் என்பது அறிஞர்கள் கருத்து. 

   

THATHANGI CELEBRATION

This festival is celebrated mainly by the ladies. On Thathangi day ladies prepare the Kaman, Thathangi and Kamakizhathi in red  earth. They observe fast on that day. In the evening all the ladies gathered in a common place and put the “poolai” flower and avaram poo to form a heap, which are kept on roof on Bohi day. The manual grinder - Ammi & kulavi are the main worshiping article. In the evening Kaman, Thathangi and Kamakizhathi are brought to that Common place. The Ladies used to do kummi called “kondam”. The ladies without child used to keep the “Ammi kulavi” for a while to get a child boon. This type of worship practice is believed by the villagers to get a Child.

Next day after pooja  Kaman, Thathangi and Kamakizhathi are taken in a procession and dissolved in a water body, may be in a river or in a pond. It was told that the Kaman festival was celebrated in front of this Tirthankars. The practice was abandoned  after being attacked by the Theevetti robbers, instead they started celebrate in a common place. It is believed that it will regulate the relationship between the men and women for getting  childbirth. This practice of Kaman worship was adopted in Samana Samayam is to be noted. So the Villagers  accepted Mahavir as a God, who regulate the practice of sex between men & women and celebrate Thai month third day as Kamatta festival.

சமண தீர்தங்கர்களால் கூறப்பட்ட ஆண் பெண் புனிதமான உறவை வலியுறுத்தும் ஒழுக்க நெறியை காமன் விழாவாக திருவண்ணாமலை மாவட்டத்தில் தென்பென்னை மற்றும் துரிஞ்சலாறு ஆற்றங்கரை பகுதிகளில் வாழும் கிராம மக்கள் இன்றும் கடைப் பிடிக்கின்றனர். இது பெண்கள் மட்டுமே குழந்தை வரம் வேண்டி தை பொங்கள் பண்டிகை முடிவடைந்து 21 நாட்கள் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு திருவிழா. அம்மி குழவியே முக்கியமான வழிபாட்டுப்பொருள்கள். போகி பண்டிகை அன்று பூளைப்பூ மற்றும் ஆவரை இரண்டையும் வீட்டின் கூரை மீது வைப்பர்.

தைப் பொங்கல் முடிந்த மூன்றாம் நாள் விரதம் இருந்து செம்மண்ணால் காமன், தத்தங்கி மற்றும் காமக்கிழத்தி உருவங்களை செய்வர். அடுத்த நாள் காலை பூளைப்பூ மற்றும் ஆவரை இரண்டையும் தத்தங்கி விழா கொண்டாடப்படும் பொது இடத்தில் குவிப்பர். அன்று மாலை அம்மூன்று உருவங்களையும் ஊரின் அந்த பொதுவான இடத்திற்கு ஊர்வலமாக எடுத்து வந்து பூஜை செய்வர். பெரும்பாலும் மூத்த சுமங்கலிகளின் வழிகாட்டுதலின்படியே கன்னி பெண்கள் பூஜை செய்வர். குண்டம் எனப்படும் கும்மி ஆட்டமும் ஆடுவர். பின்பு குழந்தை இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு அம்மியின் குழவியை எடுத்து மடியில் வைப்பர். இதனால் அவர்களுக்கு குழந்தைபேறு கிடைக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. ஆண் பெண் இடையேயான புனிதமான உறவை நெறிப்படுத்திய மகாவீரரை தெய்வமாக நினைத்து காமன் விழா கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். சிலகாலம் முன்பு வரை இவ்விழா இந்த தீர்தங்கரர் சிற்பத்தின் அருகே கொண்டாடப்பட்டதாகவும், பின்பு தீவெட்டி கொள்ளையர் தாக்குதலுக்குப் பிறகு ஊரின் பொதுவான இடத்தில் காமன் விழா கொண்டாடப் படுவதாகவும் கூறுகின்றனர்.
