SRI JAMBUNATHESWARAR ( JAMBUKESWARAR ) TEMPLE, JAMBAI – A THIRUVANNAMALAI HERITAGE WALK.

The visit to this temple is a part of Thiruvannamalai Heritage visit organized by the Thiruvannamalai District Historical Research Center on 30th December 2018. Jambai is a 1000 plus years old ancient Village. Saivam, Vainavam, Jainism, Buddhism and Saktham were flourished in this village. The temples like Shiva Temple, Ayyanar Temples, Jain's sculptures, Sangam period ( 1st Century BC ) inscriptions on the rocks and the remains prove that Jambai is an ancient Village. During our Heritage Walk, we had been to this Shiva Temple  and the Presiding deity is Lord Shiva is called in different names like…

Iraivan : Sri Jambunatheswarar, Sri Jambukeswarar, Sri Thanthondreeswarar
Iraivi        : Sri Akilandeswari.

Some of the Salient features of this temple are….
The Temple is under renovation some of the moorthams are removed and kept outside the sanctum and the details of the sannadhis may not holds good after Kumbhabhishekam.

The Temple is facing east with Palipedam, Dwajasthambam and Nandhi with a two tier Rajagopuram on the northern banks of river Then Pennai.. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Antarala, Arthamandapam, Maha mandapam and a Mukamandapam. In the sanctum moolavar is on a round avudayar. The two tier Nagara  Vimana is over the sanctum  without any sculptures. The Adhistana is of pradibandha ( round Kumudam ). The walls are supported with square pilasters.

In Koshtam, Vinayagar ( not in the niche now ) with Venkotrakudai and Samaram, Dhakshinamurthy Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. In the prakaram, sannadhi for  Vinayagar, Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhoodevi, Linga with Nandhi, Subramaniyar with Valli Devasena, Bairavar, Thavvai ( Jyesta Devi with Manthan and Manthi ), Laguleesar, Navagrahas, Mahishamardini ( in the front Mandapam), Sandikeswarar. Dwarabalakars are looking cute like Pallava sculpture. Ambal sannadhi is immediately after the entrance looks like a separate Temple facing east. There are two Navakanda statues kept abutting the main Sanctorum muka mandapam.

The temple was built in 10th Century during Chozha period. The temple has the contributions from Rashtrakudas, during middle of 10th Century. Murugan, Jyesta Devi, Kalabairavar, Durgai  are the original Rashtrakooda’s sculptures. The temple also has the contributions of Medieval Chozha, Vijayanagars and Nayaks. The muka mandapa of the main shrine has the simha pillars and Ambal sannadhi mandapa pillars are yazhi pillars.

The sanctum walls has the inscriptions of Paranthaka-I, Rajararaja, Rajendran-1, Kulothunga Chozhan, Koperunjingan. The Paranthaka-I, period  inscriptions mainly speaks about donations made to the temple in terms of  money, coins, Gold coins, land for conducting regular poojas Neivedhyam, burning of perpetual lamps with donar’s name. The inscriptions also mentions the original name of this temple’s iraivan as Thanthondreeswarar. How this name was changed to the present name of Jambukeswarar, is not known.

Since the temple is under the renovation, time opening and closing is un predictable.
