SRI KAILASANATHAR TEMPLE, PERUMANAM – A THIRUVANNAMALAI HERITAGE WALK.

Visit to this temple is a part of Perumanam, Adhi Thiruvarangam and Jambai heritage walk organized by Thiruvannamalai District Historical  Research centre ( திருவண்ணாமலை மாவட்ட  வரலாற்று ஆய்வு நடுவம் ) on 30th December 2018. This place Perumanam was mentioned as Perumpunam in Sangam to Vijayanagara period.    Punam is mentioned in Sangam literatures, which is  related to cultivation of Land from forest to farm. The Punam has become the name of the place.  The Perumpunam letter turned to Perumanam.  From the Heritage and literature evidences, we may conclude that this Perumanam existed since Sangam Age. The Village once has the Jain and Hindu temples. One of the Surviving temple is a Sri Kailasanathar Shiva Temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance from south side. Palipedam and Rishabam are in front. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and arthamandpam.  In the arthamandapam, Rishabam, Balamurugan and Kala Bairavar. In koshtam Dhakshinamurthy, Durgai, which are installed at a latter period.

In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Sri Parvathy, Navagrahas, Kalabairavar, Dhakshinamurthy ( old) and Sandikeswarar. Under the Vilva tree Naagars and a Shiva Lingam with Rishabam.

As per the inscription the temple was built with brick and mortar by Chozha King  Rajarajan-II ( 1156 AD). Latter contributions by Pandiyas and Vijayanagaras. The temple walls and adhistanam bears the inscriptions of Kulothungan –III ( 1178- 1218 AD), Rajarajan –III (1216 – 1257 AD), Jadavarma Pandiyan  ( 1251- 1271 AD). The Cheppu thirumeni of rishabam was donated by Dhanma merchant Niruthupan Madevan Suryan. The inscriptions mainly speaks about donations in terms of land for regular poojas, excavation of Well for swamy’s thirumanjanam, celebrations, etc,.

HOW TO REACH:
Perumanam is about 23 KM from Thiruvannamalai.
On Thiruvannamalai to Thyagadurgam road, a place called Devanur and turn left to reach Perumanam.
Thiruvannamalai to Devanur is 20 KM and from Devanur to Perumanam 3 KM.
