The Visit to this Sri Otheeswarar Temple at Othivakkam was a part of Shiva & Vishnu Temples and a Shiva Temple with Gajaprishta Vimana, at Melaiyur in Chengalpattu District on 3rd September 2023. The original temple is also believed to be of more than 600- 700 years old.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a temple tank. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are infront of the open mukha mandapam. Stucco images of Vinayagar, Murugan and Shiva & Parvati as rishabaroodar are on the top of mukha mandapam. Stucco Dwarapalakas are in-front of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is on a Round avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal Sri Thaiyal Nayaki is in the open mukha mandapam facing south. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. Koshta images are also in the Amman sannidhi.
In Prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Nataraja with Sivagami ( made of stone ), Chandikeswarar, Veerabhadra, Navagrahas, Bairavar, Nagars, Rahu & Ketu and Saneeswarar.
ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was built with bricks and cement. The Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhistanam with three patta kumudam. The Koshtas are built in sala style. A two tier vesara vimanam is on the sanctum sanvtorum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy and Brahma are in the vimana koshtam. Maha Vishnu and Brahma are with their consorts.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscription Shiva was called as Virupatcheeswarar and Ambal was called as Thaiyalnayaki. The original temple was built during Vijayanagara period. The 1296 CE inscription at Pallanguzhiiparai Panchanadhivanan Neelagangaraiyan, Abhayambukaraiya Gangaraiyan and Kannappan Dhusi Ullarai Nallan of Dhusi Village, names are mentioned. The inscriptions records the hunting. ( During Vijayanagara Period many temples were built in the name of Virupatcheeswarar. The name Panchanadhivanan Neelagangaraiyan mentioned in the inscription was a small regional king during Chozha Period. ( May not be the same person ). The place Dhusi is on the Kanchipuram to Cheyyar route.
On 1st March 1510, CE Vijayanagara King's representative Thiruvarangan called Vayirava Nayanar gifted Thirumadai Vilagam land on behalf of Kaliyugaraya Pillaiyar to this Virupatcheeswarar temple.
The present structure was built with cement concrete in 20th Century.
A recent period stone slab with inscription is found lying behind sanctum sanctorum.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Indra, Rahu and ketu worshipped Shiva of this temple and this temple is also a parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu. Also it was told that the Siddhars worships Shiva in the form of white Snakes.
The milk changed in to blue colour, during milk abhishekam to Moolavar. It is believed that sun worships Shiva every day. To prove, Sun rays falls on moolavar.
It is believed that the lost property will be recovered back after praying to Shiva of this temple.

Apart from regular daily poojas, special poojas are also conducted on pradosham, Maha shivaratri, Arudra darshan days.
