Abishekavalli / Athanur Amman Temple / Thoravallur Amman Thirukovil / தொரவல்லூர் அம்மன் திருக்கோவில், Thoravalur, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Athanur Amman Temple / Thoravalur Amman Temple at Thoravalur in Tiruppur District was a part of “Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures,  Hero Stone and Memorial stones   in Shiva & Amman Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on 27th and 28th February 2022.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The temple is facing North with a Deepa sthambam with a mandapam. Donors bas-reliefs are on the mandapam pillars. TiriShul, Oonjal, Two balipeedams and Simha vahanam are in front of the temple.  Amman is with 8 hands, holding various weapons, in sitting posture.  Dwarapalaka, Dwarapalaki and two memorial stones are in front of sanctum sanctorum, under a Asbestos sheet mandapam. The Koshtas are empty.

In praharam two stucco Horses made of brick and lime mortar  without head, Durgai, Hero stones, Memorial stones and Nagars. The details of the Hero and Memorial stones are written in a separate post.   

ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a Mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhisthana  with threepatta kumuda. Karnapathi and salaipathi are separated with Brahma Kantha pilasters. Shiva Lingam and Demon / asura’s head are in the makara thorana.

From adhisthanam to prastaram, constructed with stone. Lot of Fish reliefs are carved on the wall. An ekathala Vimanam with 3 kalasams is on the sanctum sanctorum.    

Considering the Mandap pillars, the Pilasters, Hero and Memorial stones the temple may belongs to 15th to 16th Century, Vijayanagara period. The Temple was not renovated and looks with original structure.

Considering the Hero / sati stone, memorial stones and style of construction the temple may belongs to 15th to 16th Century Vijayanagara period. The original temple was not renovated and kept in original condition.

LEGENDS
There is a legend behind the head less Horses. As per the legend, the Pujari used to tie the grass bundle near the horses. Next morning the grass bundles are missing. So he wants to check how it disappears. So he stayed in the night and found the stucco horses are eating the grass. On seeing that the horse’s head was blown out.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Only oru kala pooja is conducted and no special poojas or annual celebrations are conducted.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
Since or kala Pooja is conducted, the sanctum sanctorum will be kept opened in the morning hours.

This temple in Thoravalur is about 6 KM from Kunnathur, 19 KM from Tiruppur, 45 KM from Erode Junction.
Nearest Railway Station is Tiruppur.
