SRI PESUM PERUMAL TEMPLE, KOOLAMPANDAL ( KOOLAMANDAL ), THIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT, TAMILNADU.

This is our first Vishnu temple’s visit on 26^th May 2019, from Kanchipuram. It was told that the ancient trade route from Thondai Nadu to Chozha Nadu passes through this Village. The Village was once spread with a variety of jack fruit trees and hence this village was called as Koozhanpandal in Tamil ( Koozhan is a variety of jack-fruit ).

Moolavar : Sri Pesum Perumal ( பேசும் பெருமாள் )

Some of the important features of this temple are….

The temple is facing east with a 2009 to 2012 built 5 tier Rajagopuram. In front of the Rajagopuram there are two pillars with inscriptions  installed like Dwarabalakas.  These two stone pillars are the remains of this original temple. Palipedam, Dwajasthambam and Garudalwar are immediately after the Rajagopuram. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum and a Mandapam.

The Moolavar Sri Pesum Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi are in standing posture.  Moolavar  is holding conch and Chakra in the upper hands and right hand is in Varahastham and left hand is in kada hastham. The expression of Perumal’s face is such that Perumal is speaking to us. Hence Perumal is called as Pesum Perumal. There is a hole in the ears of Perumal which is a special work of sculptors. Moolavar and Urchavar wears the Saligrama garlands. Both Sridevi and Bhoodevi are holding Lotus in their right hands is a special feature of this temple. Moolavar, Sridevi and Bhoodevi are more than 6 feet height and was told that all the three Vigrahas were unearthed from the nearby field and original temple was in ruined condition. The temple was rebuilt with Concrete structure in 20^th Century.

In the outer prakara sannadhi for a Vinayagar as Thumbigai Alwar on the left and Anjaneya with Alwars in  asbestos sheet Mandapam  is on the right.

HISTORY & INSCRIPTION : As per the inscription of the Shiva Temple at Koolanpandal, this Village was called as Vikrama Chozhapuram of Janyangonda Chozhamandalaththu, Kazhiyur Kottaththu Paagur Nadu. Rajendra Chozha-I’s ( 1012 – 1044AD ) another name was Vikrama Chozhan.  During his Rule his Guru Sarvasiva Pandithar had constructed a Shiva Temple. It is presumed that this Pesum Perumal temple might have constructed along with Shiva Temple. The inscription stones in front of Rajagopuram speaks about donation of 14 Coins and 10 Kalam paddy   to burn Perpetual lamp and neivedhyam to Perumal by the Telegu Chozha King Sri Vijaya Gopalakandan ( 1270 AD ).

   

LEGEND: As per the palm leaf inscriptions, the Battar of this temple gave medicine to kill the female infants. The Battar used the Milk received from the parents after burning the infant, used the same for thirumanjanam to Pesum Perumal. On seeing this Perumal got angry and burned the Battar and the Village Koozhanpandal also.

FUNCTIONS AND CELEBRATIONS: Apart from regular Poojas, Tamil New Year Day, Vaikasi Visakam, Garuda Seva, Thiru Aadipooram, Krishna Jayanthi, 5 Saturdays of Puratasi, Deepavali, Vishnu Karthikai Deepam, Vaikunda Ekadesi, Koodaravalli, Thai Pongal, Thaipoosam, Panguni Uthiram, Thirukalyanam are celebrated in a grand Manner.

People used to pray this Pesum Perumal for their children to get relief from deaf, Dumb and Disabled.

The temple will be kept opened between 08.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is about 500 meters off from Kanchipuram to Vandavasi main Road.

The Place Koolamandal is about 18 KM from Kanchipuram, 100 Km from Chennai, 77  KM from Tindivanam.

Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram.

 Anjaneyar sannadhi with Alwars mandapam 

The inscription pillars may be side frames of the entrance. It was told that these are the original entrance to the temple and the height was low.
