The visit to this Vanneeshvarar Temple at on the banks of Okkapiranthan Kulam at Pillayar Palayam was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Sri Kaunakeswarar Temple ‘s Visit, our next destination was to this temple on the on the banks of Okkapiranthan Kulam in Pillayar Palayam. The 18th Century Sivagnana Swamikal had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchipuranam. The same is reproduced as given below...
வன்னீச வரலாறு
மூதழற் கடவுள் தன்னுடன் பிறந்த முன்னவர்
மும்மையர் உள்ளார்
பேதுறா மதுகை மூவரும் விண்ணோர் பெறுமவி
சுமக்கலாற் றாது
மேதகும் ஆவி இறந்தனர் அதனை விரிதழற்
பண்ணவன் நோக்கி
யாதினிப் புரிவல் எனக்குமிவ் விடும்பை யெய்துமே
யென்றுள மழுங்கி
மகோததி யனைய ஐயரம் பையர்தம் (மகோததி – பெரிய கடல்)
வாவியி னுள்ளுறக் கரந்து
சகோதரர் தம்மை இழந்தவன் றனக்குச்
சகோதரம் நீதடம் புனேல
உகாதெனைப் புரத்தி யென்றுரைத் தங்கண்
உறைந்தனன் அன்றுதொட் டளிகள்
முகேரனப் பாயும் மலர்த்தடம் அதற்கு
மொழிபெயர் சகோதர தீர்த்தம்.
எரிதழற் புத்தேள் அன்னணம் உறைய இமையவர்
எங்கணுந் துருவிப்
பெரிதிளைப் பெய்தி யாண்டுவந் துறலும் பெருந்தடத்
துறையுமீன் அவர்க்குத்
தெரிதர வியம்பிற் றாகவெங் கனலோன் செயிர்த்தடைக்
கலம்புகுந் தேனைப்
பரிவுறக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்தநீர் தூண்டிற் படுகொலை
யுறுகெனச் சபித்து
* மீன்கள் அக்கினி தேவனைத் தங்களுக்குக் காட்டினைமயால்
தேவர்கள் அவற்றிற்கு இமையாநாட்டம் அளித்தனர் என்ப.
மின்னெ வெளிக்கொண் டிரந்துநின் றைழக்கும்
விண்ணவர் தங்களை நோக்கி
முன்னுறப் போமின் வருவெலன் றியம்பி முளரிநீர்த்
தடமதன் கரையின்
மன்னுவன் னீச வள்ளலை யிருத்தி மரபுளி
யருச்சனை யாற்றி
அன்னவன் அருளாற் பெற்றனன் இமையோர்
அவியெலாஞ் சுமந்திடு மாற்றல்
தமையன்மார் மூவர் சுமக்கலாற் றாது
தளர்வுறும் அவியெலாந் தானே
கைமயுறப் பொருக்கும் மதுகைபெற் றிமையோர்
குழாத்தினுட் கலந்தனன் கனலோன்
இமையவில் வாங்கிப் புரிசைமூன் றிருத்த
யெந்தைவன் னீசனை யண்மி
அமைவரும் அன்பால்வழி படப்பெற்றோர்
அருந்திறல் எய்திவீ டடைவார்.
Moolavar : Sri Vanneeshvarar
Some of the Salient features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing east with balipedam and Nandhi with a vimanam. Once this place was full of Vanni trees and Lord Shiva obtained the name of Vanneeswarar. Moolavar is also called as Jalakandeswarar, since during rainy season, due to raise of water in the Sakothara Theertham moolavar will be submerged in the water.
There are sand stone loose sculptures of Vinayagar, Saptamatrikas, Ladies standing in a row are found on the passage leading to the Temple. In the prakaram Sakothara Theertham, Nayana Vinayagar, Sandikeswarar and Nageswarar. Nadana Vinayagar is in the inner mandapam. Bas-relief panels of Murugan, Vinayagar are also on the passage walls leading to inner mandapam.
The temple complex consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and arthamandapam. A Vesara Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.
LEGEND:
It is believed that one of the ashtadik Palaka Agni worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. It was told that there is an another meaning for Vanni is Agni. The Munis Sri Sivagnana Swamikal and his disciple Kachiappa Munivar worshiped Vanneeswarar.
TEMPLE TIMINGS:
Since orukala pooja is conducted the closing and opening time is un predictable.
HOW TO REACH:
The temple is about 1.5 KM from Kanchipuramn Bus Stand, 2.0 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 37.0 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
