Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram Shiva Temples Visit- 16

The visit to this Kanikandeeswarar Temple was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Nagareeswarar Temple near Mettu Theru Bus Stand visit, our next destination was to this temple near Padavettamman Temple at Pillayar Palayam.

Some of the Salient features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing east with 3 tier Rajagopuram. Balipedam and Nandhi is after the Rajagopuram. A Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar is on the top of Mandapam. Moolavar is of 16 faces / Dhara Lingam is in the sanctum with nagarabaranam. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai are in the koshtam. In the prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Sandikeswarar.
The Temple complex consists of Sanctum sanctorum, arthamandapam and a mahamandapam. A Vesara Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. It was told that the original temple belongs to Pallava period and reconstructed during Vijayanagara period. But the present structure is estimated to be of 200 years old.
LEGEND:
It is believed that the Name KaNIkaNdeeswarar ( கணிகண்டீஸ்வரர் ) might have turned to the present name of Kanikandeeswarar ( கனிகண்டீஸ்வரர் ). In Tamil KaNi means Number, add, estimate, etc. KaNitham – கணிகன் – means Astrologer and KaNikam means one hundred Crore. This all means that the lord Shiva knows everything. Another meaning for KaNikam, its worth could not be judged. Ie a Gem / Nagamani, might have been placed on the Shiva Linga, Which is not there now.
TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs to 20.30 hrs.
HOW TO REACH:
The temple is about 2.00 KM from Kanchipuramn Bus Stand, 3.00 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 36.0 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
