Tirthankaras and Jain Beds /தீர்த்தங்கரர்களும் சமணர் படுக்கைகளும், Aandimalai, Sholavandipuram, Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this 10th Century Jain’s monuments at Aandimalai / Sholavandipuram in Villupuram District was a part of Villupuram Heritage Walk organized by History Trails, scheduled on 24th and 25th July 2021. This Hill was also called as Panchapandavar Malai. This Jains monument consists of Bas-reliefs of Gomateshwara, Parshvanath, Mahavir, Yakshi Ambika on a slab and 25 beds. There are two inscriptions of which, one is near Gomateshwara bas relief and the other one is on the boulder.

As per the Tamil Nadu, Archaeological Department’s Display board, this monument belongs to 10th Century. Pillars are erected along the path leading to hill by the Jain Sangh, Pune in association with Madurai Jain Heritage Centre. The sad part is that the pillars were cut from the same hill path which was used earlier.

The Dharma Devi yakshi bas relief is on a stone slab installed in front of the cave. Two children images are shown on her both sides. This image is very much similar to the Dharma Devi image of Thiyagadurgam. The beauty of sculpture was spoiled by painting on it.

There are two Tirthankara images installed on a pedestal. On the pedestal it was written as Adhinathar and Adhi Bhagwan. It was told that these two images are kept along with Ambika Yakshi and the same was installed during recent years.  In the caves Gomateshwara bas-relief is chiseled on the left and Parshwanath Tirthankara images are chiseled on the right side opposite to each other. Both are in standing posture. Mukkudai is not carved over Parshvanath Tirthankara instead the headed snake’s hood is shown.

On the left side of cave and before the Gomateshwara / Bahubali bas-relief there is an inscription which reads as….

This inscription means that Veli Kongaraiyar Puththadigal had done the bas-relief images of this Bahubali and Parshvanath Tirthankara.

When we trek further we can see a broken Durga. Durga is in sitting posture in sukhasana. She is shown with 4 hands. Upper hands holds the Conch and Chakra and the Lower right is in abhaya hastam and the left hand is holding something which couldn’t be identified. This durga sculpture may belong to Pallava Period.

On the top of the Hill Mahavir Tirthankara bas-relief is chiseled on a boulder. Mukkudai is shown above Mahavir Two samaratharis are shown on his side.  There are 25 beds chiseled for the monks by the donors on the top of ths rocky hill. These 25 numbers are spread over 6 places on the Hill. Some of the beds are unfinished. On the North side of the Hill, above beds on the ceiling paintings are drawn which are not legible to see now. There is a plat form along with the beds.

On the way to top of the Hill an inscription is inscribed on boulder in the form of a poem. The inscription belongs to Kandradita Chozha’s 2nd Reign year ( 952 CE ). The inscription records that a Small King called Siddhavadavan, who ruled this area keeping the Thirukovilur as Capital, gifted the Village Panaipadi to this Pindi God ( Tirthankara ) and Madhavars ( Jain monks )  as Pallisantham. This was gifted to a Jain monk Gunaveerabatarar, in presence of many people by pouring kalasa water with Thazha thorn. From this inscription it is understood that Gunaveerabatarar was head of the Jain monastery or the Palli.

The inscription reads as…
