HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple was constructed during recent years. There is no evidence in the form of inscriptions to prove its antiquity. But Based on the iconography of the broken simha Pillar, Suriyan, Moolavar and Rishabam the original temple belongs to 9th Century Pallava period.

The present temple was constructed by one Mr Parthasarathy, a contractor by profession and a resident of Chinmaya nagar Chennai. During 1990s he went to Kalakkau near Valliyur in Kanyakumari district to get the arulvakku from Brahmin lady of a Muthalamman temple. To his surprise she holds his hands and asked him to join the Shiva Linga Banam with avudayar at his native place. He came back and searched for the said Shiva Linga. It was told that there were 108 Shiva Lingas installed in Koppur Village. He couldn’t identify the said Shiva Linga with avudayar.

Latter in connection with his sister’s marriage on the way to his Kuladeivam, Poongavanathamman Temple, the Amman came on a devotee and said that the Shiva Linga is on the banks of a tank / kulam. At last he found out the Shiva Linga and 2 pieces of Avudayar in a bush. As advised by the Gurukkal of Karaneeswarar Temple of Saidapet, Chennai, when they tried to assemble the Banam with avudayar, the two pieces of avudayar joined together miraculously. The rishabam was also found out in the tank through his Kula deivam arulvakku.

A trust was also formed with some popular personalities from Chennai. After consultation with Kanchi mutt, Lord Shiva was named as Sri Selva Sakthi Eswarar and Parvati as Sri Selva Soundarya eswari. With the blessings of Sri Sankarachariyar & his mother and help of Mutt’s  sthapathis, the present temple was constructed as per agama. The Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in a grand manner in 2008. From that date Mr Parthasarathy is doing pooja in this temple.
