This temple is 119th  Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam and 2nd Sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. During 6th to 7th Century this place was called as Kadambathurai and now called as Kulithalai / Kuzhithalai and the inscriptions mentions as, Kulirthandalai. This place is on the way to Karur from Tiruchirappalli. It is believed that it will be auspicious to worship "Morning Kadambar at Kulithalai, after noon Rathnagiriswarar at Thiruvatpokki and Evening Sri Maragadachaleswarar at Thiru Engoi malai". Since the temple is facing North similar to Kashi, hence called as Dakshina Kashi.
