SRI VASISHTESWARAR TEMPLE, VEPPUR, NEAR ARCOT IN VELLORE DISTRICT.

The visit to this temple was planned after attending a friend’s  Son marriage at Walajapet near Ranipet in Vellore District on 10^th March  2019.  Mr Ramesh from Arcot took me to this Shiva Temple at Veppur. ( The place obtained the name of Veppur since the place was once a neem forest )

The Salient features of this temple are…

The temple is on the southern banks of river Palar. The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram on the south. Palipedam, Dwajasthambam and a Rishaba mandapam. A Nayak period mandapam is between Sanctum entrance and the Rajagopuram. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum antarala and arthamandapam. Vasishta Maharishi is in the Arthamandapam facing moolavar. A Vesara vimana is above the sanctum. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dhakshinamurthy, Vishnu in place of Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In the outer prakaram Ambal is in a separate temple like sannadhi facing east. The other sannadhis are Mahasarabeswarar, Maha Prithyangara Devi, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devanai Subramaniyar, Kailasanathar with Visalakshi, Sapthamathars panel, Veerabathirar, A Shiva Linga with Manikavasakar, Suryan, Navagrahas and Sandikeswarar.

This temple is one of the ( six ) Shada Aranya Kshetram around Arcot.  Moolavar is Swayambu and believed that Muni Vasishteswarar installed and worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Arunagirinathar   has sung hymns Thirupukazh on Subramaniyar of this temple. Apart from regular Pooja, pournami pooja, pradhosham, Maha Shiva Rathri are  celebrated in a grand manner. This temple is one of the Guru parikara sthalam.

As per the 1169 AD inscriptions Vira Sampanna Sambuvarayar  constructed the mandapam and arthamandapam. The Adhistana also has the 16^th to 17^th Century Nayak period inscriptions speaks about donations made to this temple.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

The Veppur is about 5 KM from Arcot bus terminus and 3.6 Km from Arcot bypass.
