SRI UGRA NARASIMHA SWAMY TEMPLE, MADDURU NEAR MANDYA – A KARNATAKA TEMPLES HERITAGE VISIT.

After visiting the Kashi Viswanathar and Sri Ananda Padmanabha Temples at Budanur, we headed towards Madduru.   The place Maddur is on the banks of river Shimsha. Few centuries before, during Palayakara’s rule, this place was famous for the Gun powder, arms and ammunitions manufacturing. Maddu in Kannada means Gun powder. Hence this place obtained the name as Madduru. It was a flourishing agrahara during the time of the Hoysalas As per the inscriptions this place was called as Marudur alias “Narasingha Chaturvedimangala”. This place is also considered  as one of the Divya Narasimha Kshetras.

Some of the salient details  are…
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopura. Except dwarabalakas in each tier, there are no mages on the Rajagopura. A Garuda gamba is in front. A 4 pillared mandapa with Dwajasthamba are immediately after the Rajagopura.  The santum sanctorum consists of Sanctum, antarala, Navranga / Arthamandapa and a maha mandapa. The temple including out side structure was renovated in the recent years and only few structures speaks the glory of the past. The presiding deity Lord Narasimha is with 8 hands and three eyes. Two hands are tearing Hiranyakashipu apart, who lies on the laps of Lord Narasimha, two hands are holding the intestines of Hiranyakashipu which appears like a garland on the transcendental body of Lord Narasimha, other four hands are holding the weapons Chakra ( Sudharsana )/ disc, Sanghu/ Conch, pasha and ankusa. Prakalatha is on the right and Garuda is on the left.

A nagara Vimana  and vesara giriva  is on the top of the sanctum with out any images or the stucco statues. The koshtam are protruding out side the wall of the sanctum are built in the recent years.   Vishnu’s various avathara reliefs with cement and mortar are made on the prakara walls, which includes Vishnu took the incarnation of Narasimha  for his devotee  Bhaktha Prakalatha, who comes out of a pillar. In addition to this there are sannadhis for Srinivasa, Yashoda with Krishna, the Consort of Narasimha Sri Sowmya Nayaki and Narasimha nayaki, Sita, Rama, Lakshmana and Hanuman,

The garbhagriha, Sukhanasi and navaranga which were built during the Hoysala period with soapstone, while the prakara patadalakana and the gopura are of the granite. The plinth of the temple which consisted of several horizontal moldings has been completely covered by buttresses of brick and mortar of the later period.

INSCRIPTIONS: A few inscriptions of  Narasimha-I, are the earliest of the records available here.  The 1179-80 AD, inscription is one of the earliest, mentions that the consort of Narasimha was consecrated. The 1179 AD, Narasimha-I, inscription on the adhistana states that the village was converted in to an agrahara.  The Tamil inscription on the mandapa pillar mentions about the donation of pillars.

HOW TO REACH:
Madduru is on the Bengaluru to Mysuru bus route  22 KM before Mandya.  
Madduru is about 22 KM from Mandya, 72 KM from Mysuru and 80 KM from Bengaluru.
The temple is walkable distance from the bus stop.
