Durgai Amman / துர்கை அம்மன், Pallava King Kampavarman ( 852 CE ) Period Inscription, Porpandal / பொற்பந்தல், Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Durgai Amman at Porpandal of Uthiramerur Taluk in Kanchipuram District, was a part of Heritage Visit to Salavakkam, Porpandal and Peranakkavur, Shiva Temples, Pallava period Inscriptions and Heritage Sites on 15th October 2021. Thanks to Raj PanneerSelvam, Udhayaraja Rajasekaran and Kesavan for their help and travelling along with me in this Heritage Visit.

This Kampavarman period ( 871 CE ) inscription stone is worshiped as Durgai Amman by the Villagers. This Durgai Amman is connected to the Mariamman temple of this Village. During annual festival the Karagam from Mariamman temple will start only from this Durgai Amman inscription Stone, after conducting the poojas. As per the inscription this place Porpandal was called as Porpondai during 9th century.

The inscription is inscribed on three sides / faces of the stone. The inscription dated 2nd year of the reign of Kampavarman, records the sale, to a certain Valiyanai, of the right of collecting one kadi of paddy per crop, by the assembly of Porpondai in kurumpurai Nadu, a sub division of Kalakattur kottam for the up keep of the tank Malaivellapperunkulam. Kurumpurai Nadu must have comprised the territory round about Porpandal near Chengalpattu Town. The God KurumpiraiNayanar is also referred to in an inscription from Salavakkam a Village close to Porpandal.

The special imprecation attached to the inscription viz “that the defaulter will incur the sin of having destroyed Kachchippedu”, indicates the great reverence with the town of Kanchipuram was regarded at this period. The original inscription reads as…
