Odhavaneswarar Temple / Sri Chotruthurai Nathar Temple, ஓதவனேஸ்வரர் கோவில் / சோற்றுத்துறை நாதர் கோயில், திருச்சோற்றுத்துறை/ Thiruchotruthurai, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 130th  Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 13th sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. The temple is on the banks of river Kudamurutti. This is one of the Sapta Sthalangal of Thiruvaiyaru. This is one of the 44 temples which are sung by Thevara Moovar.  

In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar visited this place after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiru Kandiyur. In Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal puranam, Sekkizhar mentions that after worshiping Lord Shiva of this temple, went to Thirupazhanam and carried out the Thirupani there.

Some of the salient features of this temple are……
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier  Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Rishabam and Dwajasthambam are in front of Sanctum sanctorum under a temporary metal sheet mandapa. Rishabam and balipeedam are also there after the Rajagopuram. Vinayagar and Murugan are on both side of the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is of Swayambhu. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Arthanareeswarar, Brahma and Durgai.

Natarajar sabha and Urchavaras are in the Mandapa. A special big size Arumugar with 6 heads and 12 hands, is at the entrance of the artha mandapam in a separate Sannadhi. Next to Arumugar sannadhi, Gautama maharishi and the bas-relief of Gautama Maharishi worshiping Lord Shiva.

In prakaram and mandapam Valamchuli Vinayagar, Murugan, Maha Vishnu, Natarajar, Nalvar, Gautama maharishi, Ayyanar, Shiva Lingas, Saptamatrikas, Mahalakshmi, Navagrahas, Kasi Viswanathar Lingothbavar, Kala samhara murthy, Chandikeswarar and a three tier Hero stone. Arulalan with his wife who has got the akshaya pathiram are also in the prakaram.  There is a Merchant Group inscription with their symbols, installed in the temple complex.

All the Pancha Bhootha and Saptasthana Lingas are also in the prakaram and it is believed that worshiping of these Shiva Lingas is equivalent  to worshiping Shiva Lingas without going there.

Ambal is in a separate temple on the right facing east with sanctum sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam.  Mahalakshmi, Vinayagar and Murugan.  

The 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of the seven temples – ie SaptaSthana temples around Thiruvaiyaru.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. Latter reconstructed with stone during Chozhas, Aditha Chozha-I  (..?).  The inscriptions recorded belongs to Aditha Chozha, Parantaka Chozha,  Rajakesari varman, Konerimaikondan and Kulothunga Chozha. The inscriptions are damaged many parts during renovations.

As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as Thiruchotruthurai Mahadevar, Tholaiya Selvar and Ambal was called as Tholaiya Selvi.

Most of the inscriptions records the endowment of burning perpetual lamps, service, poojas, naivedyam ( Kariyamuthu, Thayiramuthu/ curd rice, neiyamuthu ), celebrations, maintenance of this temple for which land, Gold , palangkasu, and cattle/ 90 goat / sheep / savaa moova peradu / per lamp are gifted to this temple. A Lamp was called as Uthamathani.

A fragment stone inscription records the meikeerthi of Rajaraja-I. A Person called Nakkanadithan gave a gift of 2 Conch to blow during thirupali / pooja. One of the inscription records the gift of Land to the dancer. Another inscription records a Lamp stand was gifted by a person called Nalamallur Devar. 

Ko Rajakesarivarmar ( Rajaraja-I )’s 6th reign year inscription records that during his visit, the following are to be arranged, A lamp to be burn with 2 nazhi oil, the people who hold the lamps, cleaning staff two people, Kalamuthikal 4 persons, Salai aduvan one person, Nanthavanakudikal 3 persons, Those who are  residing temple houses.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Arunagiri Nathar, Brahma, Vishnu, Indran, Gautama Maharishi and Suryan worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

“Choru – food – சோறு”, in this legend signifies the salvation or the Mukthi or to get relieved from the cycle of birth and rebirth and reach the Lotus feet of Lord Shiva.  So, Lord Shiva not only providing food for the stomach, but bless us to attain mukthi  or salvation.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
During Nandhikeswara’s  marriage Thiruvaiyaru Aiyarappar visits this temple and Urchavar will also participates in the marriage. This temple’s urchavar will go to Thiruvaiyaru during “Ezhur Festival”

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sept ), Navaratri in the month Purattasi ( Sep – Oct ), Skanda sashti and annabishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov- Dec ), Makara sankranti in the month Thai ( Jan – Feb ) and maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ).

Kandeeswarar Temple / Brahmasirakanteeswarar Temple / Sri Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar Temple, பிரம்ம சிரகண்டீஸ்வரர் கோவில், திருகண்டியூர், Kandiyur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 129th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 12th  sthalam on the south side of River Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This place maintains the same name as Kandiyur from 7th Century. This is one of the eight Veeratta Sthalam and fifth in saptasthana sthalams of Thiruvaiyaru. Lord Shiva plucked கொய்தது ) the fifth head of Brahma with his thirisoolam திரி சூலம் ) at this place.. 

In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar visited this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirupoonthuruthi.  Nn Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal Puranam Sekkizhar didn’t mentioned this temple in particular, but as other Shiva Temples on the way.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple is facing west with 5 tier Rajagopuram. Kodimara Vinayagar, Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. A stucco entrance arch is in front of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is of Swayambhu and Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of artha mandapam. In Koshtam Brahma, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar and Pichadanar.

In the inner prakaram Navagrahas, Sadhadhapa maharishi, SaptaSthana Lingas, Kalathi Nathar who gave pradosha darshan to  Sadhadhapa maharishi, Brahma, Saraswati and Lord Shiva as Vaduga Bhairavar. 

In the outer prakaram, Dhandapani temple with Vavvalnethi mandapa, Brahma & Saraswati, Durgai and 5 lingas. Sri Mangalambigai, is in a separate temple facing south after the west side Rajagopuram. Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Mahalakshmi, Natarajar Sabha, Vishnu Durgai, Bhairavar, Different style Vinayagars, Surya and Arthanareeswarar in Sitting posture are also in the prakaram.

The temple is at lower level than the road. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam. Mandapam are of Vavval nethi type.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, the original temple was existed before 7th Century, built by Pallavas. The same was reconstructed during Chozha period.

The inscriptions belongs to Pallava King Nirupathunga varman, Chozha kings Kopparakesai varman, Uthama Chozha and Rajaraja Chozha-I. ( See the Annual Reports on South Indian Epigraphy for the year 1895 13 - 23.See also the South Indian Inscriptions, Volume III Number 134, and Volume V 568 - 579.). As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as Thiru Veerattanathu Mahadevar, Thiru Kandiyur udaya mahadevar.  Most of the inscriptions records the endowment of burning Perpetual Lamps, Day lamps, Naivedyam, ( Kariyamuthu, Paruppamuthu, Neiyamuthu etc ), Poojas,  for the same Gold, Land  and money was gifted to this temple.

Pallava King Nirupathungavarman ( 890 CE ), 21st reign year inscription records the sale of 11 ma land at Thiru Kandiyur which was assigned to two other temples, and received  gold of 110 Kalanju ( weighed in Sambirani palankasu – pure gold ), by Visaiyanallulan Marankali.   

Maduraikonda Koparakesari’s 21st reign year inscription records  the endowment of burning perpetual lamp and Naivedyam for which gold of 30 Kalanju for lamp and 15 Kalanju for Naivedyam by Thanjavur Kootrathu Thanjavur KazhaRan Umaiyapidari.

Madurai Konda koparakesari varmar’s 26th reign year records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by Pillayar Parantakan Uthamaseeli for which a land was gifted to the temple after sale.

Rajendran-I’s period inscription records the endowment of Burning perpetual lamps, Naivedyam on 3 Kala Poojas ( Parupamuthu, Thayiramuthu, Adaikayamuthu, Ilayamuthu, ) Sandhi lamps 4 nos, Ghee, oil, Curd, Vegetables and firewood required for the same, poojas on Dakshinayanam Aippasi Vishu, Uthrayanam Chithirai Vishu, Sankaranthi, Sandal paste, Kungiliyam for the holy smoke,  Clothes and the salary for the Poojari, Karnam ( accountant – Administrative officer ), Cleaning staff  and the required amount of paddy was  595 kalam, to get from a land measuring 5.75 ma was gifted to this temple.

In addition to the above a land was also gifted for Dancer, Dance teacher, musicians.

LEGENDS
Lord Shiva brought the bilva / Vilva tree from Mount Kailash for “Sadhaadhapa” munivar, hence this temple is called as “Adhivilvaranyam”. The muni used to visit Srikalahasti on pradosham day to see Lord Shiva’s pradosha darshan. When he couldn't go there Lord Shiva showed the pradosham darshan of Kalahasti at Kandiyur itself.

In Chithirai month, on Ezhur Thiruvizha – Saptha sthana thiruvizha, Urachavar  will start from this temple in a decorated palanquin. Aiyarappar will come to this temple and takes rest. Since Sadhadhapa munivar is brother of Silatha Munivar and also elder father in-law of Nadhikeswara, the tradition of giving “Kattu Choru – கட்டு சோறு( like Tamarind rice and curd rice ) during their departure, is followed still.

This temple is a Brahmahathi dosha nivarthi sthalam. Suryan Worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. On 13 to 15th evening in  Tamil  month Masi Sun rays used to falls on moolavar between 5.45 hrs to 06.00 hrs.

Pushpavaneswarar Temple / Pushpavananathar Temple / புஸ்பவனேஸ்வரர் கோயில், திருப்பூந்துருத்தி, Thirupoonthuruthi, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 128th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 11th  Sthalam on the north side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. The temple is on the south banks of river Kudamurutti. The place Thirupoonthuruthi is divided in to Melathiruppanthuruthi and Thirupoonthuruthi and the temple is in Thirupoonthuruthi. This is one of the Sapta Sthana Temples, which participates in ezhur festival at Thiruvaiyaru and Nandhiyamperuman’s marriage at Thirumazhapadi.

In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar Visited this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirukadaimudi. Sekkizhar,  in Thirunavukkarasu Puranam records that Appar stayed and established a madam at Thirupoonthuruthi — திருமடம் அங்கு ஒன்று செய்தார்.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Rishabam and balipeedam are in between first 5 tier Rajagopuram and sanctum sanctorum entrance mini Rajagopuram. Rishabam and balipeedam are not in straight line with moolavar.  Moolavar is of swayambhu. In Koshtam Dakshinamurthy ( as veena Dakshinamurthy ), Arthanareeswarar as Rishabanthikar,  ( written as Sankara narayanar… ? ), Pichadanar, Brahma and Durgai.

Painting of Thirunavukkarasu’s biography is on the walls of outer prakaram. In prakaram Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar with his two wives Paravai Nachiyar and Sangiliyar, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal in sitting posture, Thirugnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar, Nalvar, Mahalakshmi, Durgai ( Ambal in penance -standing on leg with right hand touches the head ), Veerabhadra, Vinayagar, Sri Devi, Ayyanar, Saptamatrikas, Navagrahas ( All the 8 gragas are facing Suryan ), Chandikeswarar, Suryan,  Skanda Guru, Kailasanathar, Sri Sadhathapa Maharishi, Thrupuranthakar,

In the outer prakaram Durgambika is in a Separate sannadhi, Kasi Viswanathar. Shiva Lingams of associated temples with saptha sthanam are in the outer prakarm and it is believed that worshiping of these Shiva Lingas is equivalent  to worshiping Shiva Lingas without going there.

The recorded inscriptions belongs to Ko Rajakesari Vrman, Adhithya, Parantaka Chozha ( Madurai Konda Parakesarivarman ),  Pandya King Sundara Pandyan and Vijayanagara King Vijayarayar Maharayar, Vira Bhoopathi Udyar, Achuthadeva maharayar and Tulaja Maharaja, Veerappa Nayakar. As per the inscriptions this place was called as Pandyakulapathi Valanattu Arcot Kootrathu Thiruppoonthuruthi, Pandyakulanasini Valanattu Arcottu Kootrathu Thirupoonthuruthi and Lord Shiva was called as Thiruppoonthuruthi Udayar, Thirupoonthuruthi Udaya Nayanar,  Periya Nayanar, Pushpavananathar and Ambal was called as Maragatha Nachiyar and Azhagalamarnda Ammai. Most of the inscriptions records the endowment of burning perpetual lamps, Naivedyam etc for which land, gold, paddy was gifted to the temple. 

Sundara Pandyan period Inscription starts with his meikeerthi records the endowment of Naivedyam for Adhichandeswarar, Periyanayanar, Periya Nachiyar for which land was gifted by Kiliyur Nattu Keel manthudai Uyyavanathan Rajarajadevar.

Chozha King Ko Rajakesaribarmar’s ( Aditha-I ) 3rd reign year inscription records the endowment of  supplying ghee to the perpetual lamp by Pisangan Aiyaradigal of Nanandur village for which 8 Kalanju gold was deposited with the Sabha. Another inscription of the same King’s 14th reign year inscription records the endowment of  burning a perpetual lamp for which 30 Kalanju Gold was gifted by the King’s wife Nangai Sattaperumanar

The Chozha King Sundara Chozha’s 15th reign year inscription records the sale of land by the Village assembly belongs to Baradayan Narayanan, Turutti and Baradayan Narayanan Nakkan  to meet the fine ( dhandam ) of 72 Kalanju and odd gold  imposed by the assembly, upon their brother Narayanan Sri Madhavan who has not repaid the fine. Both brothers represent their case to the King stating that their land was also sold  mixed with the his brothers and other’s lands. The same was returned back to them as per king’s order.

The Vijayanagara King Vijayaraya maharaya ( 1423 CE July 19th ) inscription records the gift of Tax free land to this temple by Sivananda Perumal, the head man of Parisai. 

Another Vijayanagara King Vira Bhoopathi Udayar ( 1415 CE July 14th ) inscription records the gift of land to this temple, by Azhakiya Thiruchittrambalam Udayan Vira Singa Rayan, of Sirrarasur of the same Kootram.

The Vijayanagara King Achutha deva Maharayar period 1532 CE inscription records that certain taxes are levied on the residents of the the Villages Thirupoonthuruthi, Pandaravadai and Seniartteruvu of Kandiyur and  assigned to the temple by Krishnapuram Vardappayyar for the merit of the king on the occasion of godvadass( ?.)

LEGENDS
A little elevated place  or one that protrudes between two rivers is also called as Thuruthi. Bhoomagal worshiped the Lord Shiva of this temple, hence this place is called as Poonthuruthi. Indra, Maha Vishnu, Maha Lakshmi, Suryan and Kasiba Maharishi worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple to get rid of the curse. 

There is a separate Thirunavukkarasar Swamigal madam near the temple. Appar’s image is  in sitting posture. Since Thirupani was done by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Thirugnanasambandar hesitant to enter the temple. To get Lord Shiva’s darshan,  Rishabam moved to left side. When Thirugnanasambandar came to this place Thirunavukkarasar carried the pearl palanquin/ muthu sivigai, without the knowledge of Thirugnanasambandar. Thirugnanasambandar stayed some days with Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal madam.

As per the sthala purana, there was an argument between Rishis and Munis to get rid of the pithru curse. It will be possible  to worship Lord Shiva  on Aadi Amavasai ( new moon day ) after taking bath in 13 rivers / holy places  namely, Vedaranyam, Dhanushkodi, Sangamugam, Thriveni Sangamam, Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Kaveri, Sindhu, Brahmaputra, Thamirabarani and Rameswaram. When everybody said it will not be possible, Kasiba Maharishi took the Challenge. He came to this temple and did a penance on Lord Shiva. Appreciating his devotion Lord Shiva , made  to flow all the 13 rivers in to this temple well. Lord Shiva with Parvati gave darshan to Kasiba Maharishi as Kasi Viswanathar and Visalakshi. The Theertha well is now called as Kasiba Theertham. Kasiba Maharishi worshiped Lord Shiva and Ambal with that theertham and attained Mukti. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Saptasthana festival, Navaratri in the month Aippasi ( September – October ), Skanda Sashti in the month Karthigai ( October – November ), Thirukarthigai in the moth Karthigai ( November – December ), Thirukalyanam, Thiruvathirai in the month Margazhi ( December - January ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ) and Paarivettai.

The place Thirupoonthuruthi is on the way to Thirukattupalli from Kandiyur. Bus and Auto are available from Kandiyur.
The temple is 3 KM from Kandiyur, 5.8 KM from Thiruvaiyaru, 14.6 KM from Thirukattupalli, 14.8 KM from Thanjavur and 335 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Thanjavur.
