Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 32

The visit to this Ari sabam payam Thertheeswarar temple on Nellukara street, Periya Kanchipuram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Macheswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this temple. 

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamikal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchipuranam. The sthala purana describes Vishnu worshiping Lord Shiva to get rid of a sabam / Curse, which is written in detail under legend. The 4 songs out of  9 are reproduced as given below...

Some of the important details are ....

The temple is facing east with a small entrance Gopura. The approach was encroached by kattathotti / Fire wood shop.  Balipedam and Nandhi are after the entrance. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, arthamandapam and a mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Vishnu worshiping Lord Shiva, Shiva Lingam on the top of the mukha mandapam. In the prakaram Sandikeswarar.

LEGEND:

As per the Kanchipuranam, during the war between Devas and asuras, the asuras frightened and surrendered to Birugu Muni’s wife Kiyathi, mother of Sri Lakshmi. Vishnu killed Kiyathi, even not considering her as a woman and mother in-law, for offering shelter to the asuras. Angered Birugu cursed Vishnu to take ten births and suffer in Naraga lok. Birugu with the help of Sukra gave life to his wife Kiyathi. To get rid of the curse / sabam, Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

The visit to this Siddheeswar Temple, on Gandhi Road / Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu Road, on the banks of Manjalneer Kaalvai was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Kailasanathar Temple, our next destination was to this Sri Meikendeeswarar Temple.

Moolavar: Sri Siddheeshwar

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The temple is facing east with a 2 tier Rajagopuram spreads in a 50 cent land. Balipedam and Nandhi are after the Rajagopuram.  Moolavar is swayambu, about 2 meter high  and 2 meters circumference boulder. Urchavars / Procession deities are, Chandrasekar and Ambal. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma  and Durgai. In parakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Sandikeswarar, Navagrahas and Maha Vishnu / Thirumal.

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, arthamandapam and Mahamandapam.  A Three tier Nagara vimana with Karna kutas and Salas. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhisthana.

HISTORY

As per the Kanchipuranam, Lord Shiva was called as “Manjaneer Koothar – மஞ்சணீர் கூத்தர்” or “Siddheeshan – சித்தீசன்” and the Manjal Neer Kaalvai was called as “Kambai Nadhi – கம்பை நதி”. The theertham was called as Sidha thiirththam. It is believed that the temple was built during Pallava period and latter had Chozhas and Vijayanagaras contributions.

LEGEND:

As per the legend Ambal Umaiammai, after applying turmeric paste took bath in the river to stop the flood, the turmeric powder which  dissolved with water  and flowed like yellow water river. Hence the river was called Manjal Nadhi ( மஞ்சள் நதி ), the same is being called as Manjalneer Kaalvai now. Lord Shiva was also called as “Manjal Neer Koothar“. Many Siddhars worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

The temple will be kept opened between 08.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

The temple is about 7 meters from Kanchipuramn Bus Stand, 2.2 KM from Kanchipuram Railway station, 30.0 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.

The visit to this Anantha Padmanabha Eeswarar Temple on Lingappan St, Near Sri Ekambareswarar Temple was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Ari Sabam Payam Theertheeswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this temple.

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamikal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchipuranam. He had mention the location of the temple, referring three other temples with directions. This might have the clue to identify the temple by Maha Periya, which was disappeared many decades ago. The songs are reproduced as as given below...

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple is facing east with balipedam and Nandhi. The temple is very small with sanctum Sanctorum. Sri Vishnu in reclining posture of adhishesan  as Anantha Padmanabhan with Sri Lakshmi at his feet on the back wall of Moolavar. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum.

The stucco image of Anantha Padmanabhan  with his consort Sridevi, is at the top of the entrance to the sanctum. An ekathala vesara Vimana is over the sanctum sanctorum. There is Koshtas.

LEGEND:

The Sthala purana describes the Lord Shiva and Parvati played with Vishnu as a referee. Even though Parvati won the game, Vishnu gave judgement against her. Angered Parvati cursed Vishnu. To get rid of the curse, Vishnu came to Kanchi, established a Shiva Linga and worshiped Lord Shiva.

HISTORY:

The temple was believed to be buit during Pallava period  and existed even after 18^th Century. Sri Sivagnana Swamikal had written this temple’s sthala purana mentioning the other nearby temples with directions. Latter the temple disappeared from the map. This gave a clue to Maha Periyava to identify the Temple. With the consent of the present owner of the Land, the place ( said to be a Toilet area ) was excavated and both Shiva Linga and Anantha Padmanabha Murtis were unearthed below 6 to 7 feet.

The land was purchased by the Sankara mutt and a small temple was constructed on the same place.

Since orukala pooja is conducted the opening and closing time is un predictable. The Archakar is near by and help for the dharshan

Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 29

The visit to this Meikandeeswarar temple, inside Thondai Mandala Adheenam, Melkathirpur, Periya Kanchipuram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Kaduveli Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi  ( Mathaleeswarar Temple ), our next destination was to this Sri Meikendeeswarar Temple.

During Pallava and Chozha period, South India was divided in to Thondai mandalam, Kongumandapam, Chera Nadu, Nadu Nadu, Chozha Nadu and Pandya nadu. This Adheenam was formed in the name of  Thondai mandalam itself. Thondai Mandala Adheenam was founded by Gnanaprakasar, during 14^th Century. Now the adheenam was headed by  232nd Guru Mahasannidhanam of Thondaimandala Adheenam, Sri Thiruvambaladesika Gnanaprakasha Swamigal.

Moolavar : Sri Meikandeeswarar / Sri Meikanda Eswarar

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple is facing east with a single tier Rajagopuram. The Stucco images of Meikanda Nayanar and Thondaimandala Adheenam are on the Rajagopuram. Balipedam and Nandhi are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are in the arthamandapam. Balipedam and Nandhi are in antarala also. Vinayagar and Subramaniyar are in the arthamandapam. Sandikeswarar is in the prakaram.

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and arthamandapam.  We could see Pallava / Chozha period Pillars in the arthamandapam. It was told that this temple was built during Pallava period and reconstructed during Chozha period. Now the temple is under the control of Thondaimandala Adheenam and called as Thondai Mandala Adheenam Temple. 

LEGEND:

It is believed that one of the 63, Nayanmars, Meikanda Nayanar  worshiped Lord shiva of this temple.

The temple will be kept open between 07.0 hrs to 111.00 hrs  and 17.00 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 28

The visit to this Kadageswarar temple on Big Kamala St, Melkathirpur, Periya Kanchipuram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Ari Sabam Payam Theertheeswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this Kaduveli Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi ( Mathaleeswarar Temple ).

There is no formal temple. The Shiva Linga is under a metacolour sheet shed. During our visit decorations were made for Maha Shivaratri.

HISTORY

The story of Kaduveli Siddhar is associated with the Irumbai Mahakaleshwarar Temple,  Shiva Temple. During his period, the place was suffered due to drought with out rain. It was told to the king that this was due to Kaduveli Siddhar’s severe penance. To stop this the king sent a Devadasi dancer. Disturbed  due to the dance the Kaduveli siddhar stopped his penance. During the Urchavar's procession, the anklet of the Devadasi dancer had fallen down. Kaduveli Siddhar fixed back her anklet. Seeing this act the people started mocking at him. Angered Siddhar, sang a song on Lord Shiva to prove his devotion and dedication. Immediately the Shiva Linga burst in to 3 pieces. Seeing this the people and the King realized their mistake and seek apology from the Siddhar. Kaduveli Siddhar has sung a song and the Shiva Linga joined back.

The temple is very small with sanctum Sanctorum, in between buildings. Moolavar is in the sanctum. Balipedam, Nandhi, Vinayagar and Navagrahas are in the mandapam. Stucco image of Lord Shiva with Parvati is on the back side wall of the sanctum sanctorum.

  

A Stucco image of Somaskandar image is on the top of the mandapa. A single tire vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.

LEGEND

Ambal Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva after wearing a string around her waist. Established a Shiva Linga with a bracelet Hence called as Kadakeswarar. In another legend, since Ambal worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple in the form of  Crab – Kadagam, hence called as Kadageswarar.
