This is the 179th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery and 62nd sthalam of Chozha Nadu. The temple is on the banks of river Arasalaru.
In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruveezhimizhalai. Even though he didn’t mentioned this temple in particular, but mentioned as other temples on the way.

Some of the salient features of this temple are..........The temple is facing east with a two tier Rajagopuram. A balipeedam and a Rishabam are after the entrance Rajagopuram. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
In prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Nalvar, Shiva Lingas, Bhairavar, Suriyan, Chandran, Shaniswarar and Two Chandikeswarar. Sthala puranam bas-relief is on the out side mandapam wall. In prakaram Somaskandar and Natarajar
Ambal is in a separate Sannadhi. Ambal is small and dwarapalakas are in stone. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam and a open mukha mandapam. A Vesara vimana is on the sanctum.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSSince Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. Latter the same was reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period and further extended / maintained during Vijayanagara / Maratha period and Nattukottai Nagarathars.Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 21st August, 2002.
LEGENDSIt is believed that Brahma, Agni, Sage Agasthiyar, Sanathkumarar and Sanathanar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.
As per the legend the sage Kathyayana and his wife Sumangali did a penance on Lord Shiva and Parvati for a child boon at Thiruveezhimizhalai. Pleased with their penance ma Parvati herself was born as a child to them. She was brought up by the sage as Karthiyayini. When she attained the marriageable age, the sage prayed to Lord Shiva to find him a suitable bridegroom. Lord Shiva appeared and told him that Karthiyayini is non other than ma Parvati and he will marry her on “Magha” nakshatra day in the month Chithirai. Ma Parvati did a penance on Lord Shiva at this place to marry her. Lord Shiva appeared, blessed and married her at Thiruveezhimizhalai.
In another legend, Dkashan conducted an Yagna for which Maha Vishnu, Brahma, Ashtadikpalakas, Pancha bhutas including Agni and Devas attended. Lord Shiva was not invited for the same. When asked by ma Parvati as Dakshayani, Dakshan didn’t gave proper response. Angered Lord Shiva sent Veerabhadra and Ma Kali to destroy the Yagna. Veerabhadra killed Dakshan by cutting his head latter replaced with a goats head. The participants of Yagna was cursed and punished. In that Agni was also cursed and lost his hands and tongue. He came to this place worshiped Lord Shiva with Vanni leaves and got relieved from the curse, restored his hands and tongue. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Agneeswarar. Agni also requested Lord Shiva to bless the devotees who are suffering from the deceases related to “ushnam – Heat”. The place was called as Vanniyur ( Vanni + oor ) and the same was got corrupted to the present name of Anniyur.
Parihara sthalam for Vastu and it is believed that blood pressure and heat ( ushnam ) related ailments will be cured if one takes bath in Agni theertham and worships Lord Shiva.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart from regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sept ), Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), Thiruvathirai in the month Margazhi ( Dec – Jan ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi (Feb – March ) and every month pradosham days.
