LEGENDS
Vedas, Devas, Ashta dikpalakas, worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

When Agasthiyar was worshiping Lord Shiva of this temple, with out knowing a king ( Deva..?) was travelling on the sky in a Chariot, which disturbed Agasthiyar’s worship. So Agasthiyar  made the king's Chariot to ground. தேர் + அழுந்தூர் –தேரழுந்தூர் ) Hence this place is called as Therazhundur. In another version The King Oorthuvaradhan of mazhava nadu was an ardent devotee of Brahma. Pleased by his prayers Brahma gifted him a flying Chariot. Once the King was flying above Therazhundur his Chariot wheels got struck up and grounded. He found that the sage Agasthiyar was worshiping Lord Shiva. He realized the reason why his Chariot got struck up and landed here. The prayed Agasthiyar and pardon him. Hence this place was called as Therazhundur.

Ambal ma Parvati’s marriage in is associated with many places around this temple / place. When Lord Shiva and Maha Vishnu Played dice. Instead of acting as a mediator ma Parvati, supported  Maha Vishnu for his foul play. Angered Lord Shiva, at Therazhundur ma Parvati to become a Cow and Maha Vishnu to play the role of shepherd. At Thirukozhambam ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva, to get rid of the Curse as Cow. At Thiruvaduthurai also Ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Cow. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Kokileswarar. At Thiruthuruthi ma Parvati came out of yagna conducted by the sage Bharatha. Ma Parvati was brought up by the sage. At Ethirkolpadi Lord Shiva was welcomed as bridegroom by his father-in-law sage Bharatha. The marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati took place at Thiruvelvikudi and at Thirumananjeri marriage darshan was given to all.

Vazhikatti Vinayagar temple is on the way to this this temple. When Thirugnanasambandar was on his way to this temple, at one point he couldn’t decide in which way to proceed. So Vinayagar showed him the correct way, to this temple. Hence Vinayagar is called as Vazhikatti Vinayagar.
