Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple / Veda Giriswarar Temple ( மலைக்கோயில் )/ Arulmigu Bhakthavachaleswarar Temple ( தாழக் கோயில் ), Thirukazhukundram / திருக்கழுக்குன்றம், Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 28th Devaram and Thiruvasagam  paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam. Even-though there are two temples, one on the top of the hill and the other on the base of the hill, all the 4 Saiva saints has sung hymns on, Vedagiriswarar of the Hill temple.


In Periyapuranam, Sekkizhar, had written that Thirugnanasambandar after the darshan of Idaichuranathar, reached Thirukazhukundram with his disciples. He got down from the
    
    திருக்கழுக்குன்றத்து அமர்ந்த
        செங்கனகத் தனிக்குன்றை
    பெருக்கவளர் காதலினால்
        பணிந்து எழுந்து பேராத
    கருத்தினுடன் காதல் செயும்
        கோயில் கழுக்குன்று என்று
    திருப்பதிகம் புனைந்தருளிச்
        சிந்தை நிறை மகிழ்வுற்றார்

Thirugnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar has sung hymns on Vedagiriswarar of Thirukazhukundram Hill temple.
    
    தோடுடையான் ஒரு காதில்தூய குழைதாழ
    ஏடுடையான் தலைகலனாக இரந்துண்ணும்
    நாடுடையான் நல்ளிருள் ஏமம் நடமாடும்
    காடுடையான் காதல் செய்கோயில் கழுக்குன்றே

    மூவிலைவேற் கையானை மூர்த்தி தன்னை
    முதுபிணக்கா டுடையானை முதலா னானை

    பூவினின்மேல் நான்முகனும் மாலும் போற்றப்

Some of the salient features of this temple are ….
The entrance to the hill starts from south with a recently built entrance arch at the Moolavar is of swayambhu. Balipeedam is in front of the sanctum sanctorum.

In the inner prakaram  Sri Vinayagar,  Ambal Pennin Nallal sannadhi and a Shiva Lingam. On the east side entrance Sri Vallabha Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Sri Subramaniar and on the North side entrance  Sri Vinayagar and Sri Murugan Natarajar sabha are in the artha mandapam. Ambal is in standing posture facing north. There are no images in koshtam.

In addition to the Sangu Theertham there are 12 Theerthas in this place Thirukazhukundram. They are  namely 1. Indira, 2. Shambu, 3. Rudra, 4. Vasishta, 5. Meignana-true wisdom. 6. Agasthya, 7. Markandeya, 8. Kausika, 9. Nandhi, 10. Varuna, 11. Akalika and 12. Pakshi theerthas.

The 15th Century Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Murugan of this temple. This hymn may belongs to the Murugan of the Lower temple. He describes this place is equal to Indra’s Capital Amaravati.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS:
On the return path There is a Pallava period Kudaivarai ( Rock cut  cave temple ). This rock cut Shiva Temple was excavated during AD 610 to 640 by Mahendravaraman-I.  This is now under the control of Archaeological Survey of India.

The arch at the starting of steps was constructed in 2013. Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in Sep, 2013 along with the base temple. 

Narasimha Varman-I, Inscription ( ARE No 65 of  1909 ) mentions Lord Shiva as Kalathur kottathu Kalathur nattu Perumanadigal on the Srimalai ( Hill ) of Thirukazhukundram, records the endowment of land for worship, by Vathapikonda Narasinga Potharaisar. 

Rajendra Chozha-I’s 16th year reign Inscription ( AR 171 of 1894 ) with his full meikeerthi / Title, records the endowment of a perpetual lamp to ThirukazukunRam alias Ulagalantha Chozhapuram Moovudaiyar… Vidangathevar  by  Amoor kottathu, Mamallapuram also called as Jananathapuram Kollampakkam Madhavan Etti for which he gave 90 sheep / goat.

Rajathirajan period inscription ( ARE 172 of 1894 ), with his full meikeerthi / Title, records the robbery of bag and lady ( from shops..?) for which donation of land with its periphery limits after sale to this Hill temple. This case was enquired by the Village sabha and judgement was pronounced. It also describes the punishment given to the two Roberer to wear ladies dress named as Ahavalli and another persons head was tonsured and named as Ahamallan.  

Another Rajendra-I’s 5th year reign inscription ( AR 173 of 1894 ) records the endowment of perpetual lamp by a Chembur kottathu Pattina Nattu,Koduvurpalli Kandan Sathan for which he gave 90 sheep / goat.

Chozha king VeeraRajendran period inscription ( AR 175 of 1894 ) with his meikeerthi / title records the endowment of perpetual lamp , in 3 times totaling 6 Lamps for which 540 sheep / goat was given to this temple, by Chembur Kottathu… Udhayanthittaiyar Narpathonyaariraththu (41000) Thirukazhukundra Kannappan.( May be a merchant )

The chozha King Vikrama Chozha’s 3rd year reign inscription ( AR 176 of 1892 ) records the endowment of a perpetual lamp for which 90 saava moova peradu சாவா மூவாபேராடுகள் ) / sheep goats Chembur kottathu Koduvurkudipalli Thiruvenkattikalaran Sathaiyan alias Gurukularayaperi Araiyan.

Sambuvarayar King Rajanarayana Samburayar’s 3rd year reign inscription ( AR 178 of 1894 ), records the endowment of a perpetual lamp for which 8 cows are given to the temple, by Mallinathar alias Sambuvarayar. The cows are given to Cheyyar Mandradi Thazhikon Karikalachozhakon Suryan and agreed to  supply 24 Nazhi uri ghee per year and to be measured in Rajakesari Nazhi.

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s 24th year reign inscription (AR 180 of 1894 ), inscription records the limits of various lands. It starts with Jayangonda Chozhamandalathu Amoor kottathu Kumuzhi NattuVanavanmadevi Chathurvedi mangalam and Temple Rajendra Chozhavinnakarathalwan temple. The inscription has been written on Cheppedu also.  

Koperunchingan’s,  21st year reign inscription ( AR 181 of 1894 ), records the year and date on which the endowment was made for lighting of perpetual lamp, for which 10 cows are donated by Chozhinga Nachiyar. The 16 cows are received by five persons and agreed to supply  ( 1/8 ) araikkal lamp  for 4 Cows and  ( 1/16 ) mahani lamp for two cows,  totaling to ½ Lamps to the temple. Here measure is given in terms of Lamp and not in terms of ghee to be supplied. Must be in terms ghee only.  

Chozha King Rajaraja-III, 37th year reign inscription records the ( AR 182 of 1894 ) endowment of lighting lamp for Hill temple Aadhi Chandeshwara, sannadhi by three persons Pazhal kottathu Manali manradiyars. They have agreed to supply 60 nazhi ghee after deducting 30 nazhi which was supplied earlier  for ¾ perpetual lamp and they assured that it will be followed by their

Pandya king Sundara Pandyan period inscription ( AR 186 of 1894 ), records the endowment of lighting a perpetual lamp by 4 people  after receiving 100 Saava moova peradu,  and agreed to supply of ulakkal ghee / per day  measured in Rajakesari .

LEGENDS
It is believed that, the 4 Vedas holds Lord Shiva in the form of Hill, hence Lord Shiva is called as Vedagiriswarar.  This is the place where Sundarar  has got gold from Lord Shiva.

As per the legend the two sages Poosa and Vruddha performed on Lord Shiva, seeking sharoopa tatus. Instead Lord Shiva gave them the  boon of Sayujya status and promised to elevate them to Sharoopa status latter. Since they are very adamant of getting only the Sharoopa status Lord Shiva cursed them to become Eagles. The two eagles as Shambu and Aadhi worshiped Lord Shiva after creating a Pakshi theertham. The two eagles used to come and feed by grukkal on the hill continued more than 1000 years and it seemed that they stopped coming. In first yuga the cursed

Markandeyar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, to do abhishekam a conch appeared from the theertham. Hence called as Sangu Theertham and the Sangu / conch appears once in 12 years and they are taken to the temple in a procession.

Indra, Thilothamai a dancer of Indra’s court and Garuda the vahana of Lord Maha Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. It is believed that Indra worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Lightning through a hole on the top of sanctum Sanctorum. It was observed an unbearable heat in the sanctum Sanctorum, the same was recorded in 1930. It was also told that this happens once in two years. Lord Shiva gave darshan to Sundarar, Manickavasagar as a Guru and the King Suraguru

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted pournami poojas / full moon day, Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri.10 days Brahmotsavam in Chitrai  ( April- May ), Adi pooram, Deepavali, both Tamil and English new year Days, Thirukarthigai. From the Sekkizhar's Periyapuranam Girivalam was practiced by Thirugnanasambandar, ( might be practiced before Thiruvannamalai ) and the same is continued. Almost all the celebrations are done at the base temple. On Chithirai Brahmotsavam 3rd and 10th day Lord Shiva and Parvati on adhikara nandhi circumambulate the Hill. On 10th day of Aadi pooram festival Ambal will circumambulate the Hill.

SRI BAKTHAVATCHALESWARAR TEMPLE  / ARULMIGU BHAKTHAVASALESWARAR TEMPLE, THIRUKAZHUKUNDRAM BASE TEMPLE தாழ கோவில் ).
This temple is an annexure to the Vedagiriswarar  Hill Temple. The temple spreads over 10 acres. It is a huge temple  with Ambal temple built separately. The temple is   

Moolavar  : Sri Bakthavasaleswarar  
Consort    : Sri Thirupura Sundari  

Some of the important details are …. 
Out of 5 raja gopurams ( two on the east side ), 4 are of 7 tiers and the second level Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers. Moolavar vimanam is of Gajarishta type. The sanctum sanctorum is little elevated level. Moolavar is on a Square avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In the inner prakaram Chandikeswarar, Suryan, Vinayagar, Sundarar, 63 var as Urchavars, Bhairavar without dog,

In Prakarm Jambukeswarar, Adhmanathar with only pedam, Manickavasagar with Lord Shiva in upadesa posture with Vyakyana mudra, Arunachaleswarar, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Prathaksha Vedagiriswarar with a separate Balipedam, Agoraveerabadra, Dwajasthambam, Ashta bhuja Durgai is on the present office complex, Agora Veerabadrara, Ekambareswara, Anugraha Nandhi, SomasKandar, etc.   

Ambal is in a separate temple like sannadhi. Sri Chakra pathakkam is adorned Ambal and abhishekam is  done on Adipuram, Panguni Uthiram and Navaratri Navami day. Only patha pooja will be done daily. Vilenthiya Velan /Murugan in front of Ambal sannadhi moortham is very beautiful.

There is a 16 Pillar mandapam with lot of relief on the pillars and nayaka period old paintings are on the ceiling. This temple belongs to 5 Chariots which will be pulled during brahmotsavam.

As per the inscriptions this place was called as Ulakalantha Chozhapuram, which was in Jayangonda Chozha mandalathu Kalathur Kottam. The inscriptions on the moolavar and Ambal sanctum sanctorum wall, belongs to the 7th century Pallava, Chozha and Rastra kooda  period. ( Please refer the malai temple inscriptions )
