Bhaktajaneswarar Temple / Naavaleeswarar Temple - Thirunavalur / Tirunavalur, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 40th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 8th Shiva Sthalam of Nadu Nadu. This place Thirunavalur  is on the banks of river kedilam. This is the birth place of Sundarar, one of 63 Nayanmar and also who has compiled the 60 nayanmaras. In Periya Puranam Sekkizhar mentions  that Sundarar  visited this temple on his pilgrimage yathra, after after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruthinai Nagar.  

    மேவிய அத்தொண்டர் குழாம்முடைந்துஅரஎன்று எழும் ஓசை
    மூவுலகும் போய் ஒலிப்ப முதல்வனார் முன்பு எய்தி
    ஆவியினும் அடைவுடையார் அடிக்கமலத்து அருள்போற்றிக்
    கோவலன் நான்முகன் எடுத்துப் படியே கும்பிட்டார்

Even-though Sundarar was born &  brought up  from this Village, he might have worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple many times. But during this pilgrimage, Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

    கோவலன் நான்முகன் வானவர் கோனுங்குற் றேவல்செய்ய
    மேவலர் முப்புரம் தீயெழு வித்தவன் ஓரம்பினால்
    ஏவல நார்வெண்ணை நல்லூரில் வைத்தெனை ஆளுங்கொண்ட
    நாவல னார்க்கிடம் ஆவது நந்திரு நாவலூரே.

Vallalar also mentions this temple in his Thiruarutpa.
                                    “‘பன்னரிதாம்
    ஆவலூர் எங்களுடை யாரூர னாரூராம்
    நாவலூர் ஞானியருண் ஞாபகமே

Some of the important features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is of swayambu and in koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy ( in standing posture as Rishabanthikar  ), Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. Ambal is in a separate Sannadhi facing east. The procession deities are Vinayagar, Murugan with his consorts, Pichadanar, Saint Sundarar with his two wives.

Sthalapura bas relief is on the wall of prakaram, Natarajar & Sivakami, Shiva Lingas worshiped by Sapta Rishis, Polla Pillayar, Sekkizhar, Gajalakshmi, Navagrahas, Sri Bhargaveeswarar, Suryan, Bhairavar and Sundarar with Paravai Nachiyar and Sangili nachiyar and Shiva Linga believed to be worshiped by Sundarar’s foster father and Chozha King Narasinga Maniayaraiyar.

There is a separate sannathi for Maha Vishnu in the same Temple complex and the details of construction is not known. The temple is big with lot of Teak wood trees grown in the outer prakaram. 

The 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar also visited this temple and worshiped Murugan of this temple.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple is believed to be existed before 6th to 7th Century and reconstructed Rajathithan, son of Parantaka-I. The temple is called as Thiruthondeecharam alias Rajaditha Eswaram and the place is called as Thirunavalur or Jambunathapuri, Since Shiva appeared under a Jambu Tree ( naval Tree ). As per the inscriptions this place was mentioned as Thirumunaipadi, Thirunavalur during Parantaka-I, Rajendra Valanattu Thiruminaipadi melur nattu Thirunavalur during Vijayarajendran’s period, Gangaikonga Chozha Valanattu Thirumunaipadi Melur nattu Thirunavalur during Kulothunga Chozha-i’s 37th year reign, and Rajaraja valanattu Thirumunaipadi melur nattu Thirunavalur during Kulothunga Chozha’s another year rule.

As per the inscription ( SII Vol VII No 954 to 1010 ) this temple was reconstructed as a stone temple by Kokizhanadikal Parivaarathal Chithra komalam  wife of Parantaka Chozha’ and mother of Rajaditha Chohza’s 28th year reign. The inscription also records the endowment of lighting a perpetual lamp for which Saava moova Peradu 90 and eezha Lamp  by Chithrakomalam. The fragment incomplete inscription ( SII Vol VII No 963 ) records the sthapathy’s name as “Thalaichang... தலைச்சங்..... “
The inscription ( SII Vol VII no 1002 )  with out name of the King and year records the construction of Two mandapas in front of Sanctum sanctorum by Velur Kizhavan Pallipattanasamy Periyan.

Rajaraja’s 21st year Rule inscription records the endowment of  Natarajar pedestal weighing 1750 palam, which was measured by Thirunavalur Kol, by Mummudi Chozha Brahmarayar Kanmi Kazhupparudayan Chithra Gupthan.

Rajadithya’s 3rd year reign inscription  records the endowment of Naivedyam, Kariyamuthu ( படி இரட்டி மூன்று சந்தியும், குத்தல் அரிசி ப்ன்னிரு நாழி, நெய் முப்படியும், நெல்லு முந்நாழி ) by Munayatharaiyar Abharayithan kulamaaNikerumanar aruli seyya Chemmanang Koorudaya Namburan Perumukizhan Vikramaaparana Pallavarayan. For which a land was donated after forest land was converted.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Parvati ( Before marriage with Lord Shiva ) Celestial deities, Indra, Brahma Maha Vishnu ( worshiped  to seek the blessings of narasimha Avatar to kill Hiranya Kasibu ), Maharishis, Sukran ( to get relieved from Vakra dosham ), Ashtadik Palakas, Suryan  and Garudan ( during fight with Adiseshan, the colour of Garudan has turned to Blue, to get back the original Colour ), Sivapriyar ( got the position of Chandikeswarar ) worshiped lord Shiva of this Temple.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Mahashivaratri ( Feb – March ), Sundarar’s birth day in Avani uthiram start day ( Aug – Sep ), Sundarar’s Guru Pooja  in Aadi, Swati star day ( July – Aug ) and Chithirai Car festival ( April _ May ).

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

Share autos are available from Kedilam stop ( 2 KM ). ( Kedilam is near Villupuram on the NH 45 route to Trichy )
Buses plying to Panruti  from Villupuram passes through Thirunavalur.
The temple is 16 KM from Ulundurpet, 17 KM from Panruti, 24 KM from Villupuram, 37 KM from Virudhachalam and 190 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station is Ulundurpet.
