The Visit to this Sri Jeyangkonda Soleeswarar Temple at Nemam, near Karaikudi was a part of Shiva, Vishnu Temples of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th September 2023. This Jeyangkonda Soleeswarar Temple is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars in Sivagangai District. This place was once called as Niyamam.

The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram under mandapam. The south side Rajagopuram is of 3 tiers. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar and Subramaniar are on both side entrance of the ardha mandapam. Utsava Murtis and natarajar are in the ardha mandapam. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal Soundarya Nayaki is in separate sannidhi facing east. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.
In paraharam, Vinayagar, Murugan, Somaskandar, Nalvar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Maha Lakshmi, Durgai, Saraswati, Chandikeswarar, Bairavar, Navagrahas, Chandran and Suriyan.
ARCHITECTURE
The Temple complex consist of Shiva and Ambal temples are on raised platform. The Shiva’s temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam and adhistanam. The adhistanam is with jagathy, Kumudam and pattika. The bhitti starts with vedika. The Kostas are of sala & padra Kostas with silambu / kadaka kumudam. The pilasters are with square base & naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai and pushpa pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with madhalam, kapotam with nasi kudus. The Nasi kudus are with the images of various deities. The paraharam / corridor or the circumambulatory path is very much similar to Rameswaram temple. The pillars are with Shiva, Ambal’s various forms. Vinayagar, Murugan on peacock Shiva as Rishabaroodar and Pichadanar, Mahishasuramardini and various deities around the Dwajasthambam mandapam are worth to see. 12 Rasi bas reliefs are in the ceiling after the Rajagopuram entrance.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. As per the Sivagangai mavatta Tholliyal kaiyedu, this place was called as Nemam, in the name of the King Nemarajan. There was a Fort built in this area, and there was a saying about the fort as “Neman Kottaiyo… Eman Kottaiyo”. Nemarajan was killed by his brother Soundara Pandian.
This temple was gifted to Nattukottai nagarathars by Soundara Pandian in 1714 CE.
This temple may be constructed during the beginning of 20th Century.
