Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple / Sri Varadharaja perumal Thirukovil / ஶ்ரீ வரதராஜ பெருமாள் திருக்கோவில், Minjur / மீஞ்சூர், Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Chozha period Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Minjur, was a part of “Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Saptamatrikas and Jain Tirthankara Temples Visit”, in and around Gummidipoondi and Minjur on 13^th May 2023. Due to the presence of Sri Varadarajar Temple and Ekambareswarar temples and the celebrations are conducted similar to Kanchipuram, Minjur is called as Vada kanchi. Also this place Minjur is on the north side of Kanchipuram, hence Minjur is called as Vada Kanchi.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The temple is facing East with a 5 Tier rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, Garudan are after the rajagopuram. Stucco images of Mahavishnu’s various avatars are in the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas Jayan and Vijayan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is with Sridevi and Bhudevi, about 5 feet tall. Utsava murtis are in the antarala. Alwars and Utsavars are in the ardha mandapam. There is no images in the koshtams.

Perundevi Thayar, Chakkarathalwar and Andal, mandapas are in the outer praharam.

ARCHITECTURE

The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape. The sanctum sanctorum is on a Pada bandha adhisthanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with vedika. Brahma kantha Pilasters are shown on the Bhitti. A Two tala stucco Dravida Vimanam is above the sanctum sanctorum ( adi talam ). Since from adhisthanam to top, painted, we do not know the adisthanam construction details like stone of bricks or stone. Stucco images of Maha Vishnu’s various avatars are on the Vimanam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The original temple belongs to 10^th to 11^th century Chozha period. The inscriptions recorded from this temple are published in Tamil nattu kkalvettukkal thoguthi –XVIII and Tiruvallur mavattak kalvettukkal thoguthi –1. தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கல்வெட்டுக்கள் தொகுதி-XVIII, திருவள்ளூர் மாவட்டக் கல்வெட்டுக்கள் தொகுதி – I.

வரதராசப் பெருமாள் கோயில் அர்த்தமண்டப வாயிலில் உள்ள விக்கிரம சோழனுடைய 12 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 1130 CE ) கல்வெட்டில் அவருடைய முழு மெய்க்கீர்த்தியும் ஆட்சியாண்டு மட்டும் காணப்படுகின்றது. மீஞ்சூரை ஜெயங்கொண்ட சோழமண்டலத்து விக்ரம சோழவளநாட்டு ஞாயிறு நாட்டு ஞாயிறு… கல்வெட்டு சிதைந்து உள்ளது.

On the entrance of the mandapa in-front of Varadharaja Perumāl temple left side, Miñjür, Vikrama Chozha’s 12^th reign year ( 1130 C.E ), damaged inscription records his full meikeerthi and Year. Mentions the village as Jayangonda chozha mandalathu Vikrama Chozha valanattu Nayaru nattu Nayaru…..

வரதராசப் பெருமாள் கோயில் அர்த்தமண்டப தூணில் உள்ள முதலாம் இராஜேந்திர சோழனின் ( 11^th CE ), சிதைந்த கல்வெட்டு மெய்கீர்த்தி மட்டுமே காணப்படுகின்றது.

Rajendra Chozha’s ( 11^th Century ) much damaged inscription records his meikeerthi and the rest of the inscription is not legible.

வரதராசப் பெருமாள் கோயில் கருவறைத் தென்புறச் சுவர். 1 மத்திய அரசின் கல்வெட்டு வாசகம் தரப்படுகிறது. இக்கல்வெட்டு உத்தமசோழரின் 3 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டில் ( 974 CE ) வெட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

"சோழகுல சுந்தர விண்ணகரைத் தொன்மீஞ்சூர்

வாழமது ராந்தகநுக்கு மூன்றாண்டில் ஆழிவலக்

கேசவற் கிடமாகச் செய்வித்தான் வண்மைகுலக்

கேசன் கருகைக் கோ"

இப்பாடல் நேரிசை வெண்பாவாகும். இரண்டாம் வரியில் இரண்டாம் சீரும் மூன்றாம் வரியில் முதலாம் சீரும் முறையே குற்றியலுகரம் (கு) குற்றியலிகரம்(கி) வந்துள்ளதால் தளை தட்டாது என்க. மெய்யெழுத்து போல் அவைகளும் அரை மாத்திரையே பெறும். கேசவன் கருகை என்னும் போது தளை தட்டுகிறது. கேசவாக் கருகை என வர வேண்டும் அல்லது கேசன் என்று வர வேண்டும். மூன்றாண்டில் என்பது தவறாக முன்நாண்டில் என்றுள்ளது.

கோயில் பெயர் சோழ குலசுந்தர விண்ணகர் என்பதால் சுந்தர சோழன் பெயரில் கட்டப்பட்டது உறுதியாகிறது. மீஞ்சூர் தொன்மீஞ்சூர் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆழிவலக் கேசவன் - வலக்கையில் சக்கரமேந்திய கேசவன் அல்லது வெற்றி பொருந்திய சக்கரமேந்திய கேசவன் என்க. இடமா என்பதை இடமாக என்றிருப்பினும் சரியேயாகும்.

கோயில் எழுப்பியவன் வண்மை குலத்தில் வந்த கேசவன் கருகைக்கோ ஆவான். மதுராந்தகன் என்ற பெயர் முதலாம் இராசேந்திரனுக்கும் உண்டு என்பதாலும் இராசேந்திரன் கல்வெட்டு இக்கோயிலில் இருப்பதாலும் அவன் கல்வெட்டாகவும் கொள்ளலாம். மூன்றாண்டில் என்பதை முன்நாண்டில் என்றும் படிக்கலாம். மதுராந்தகனுக்கு முன்நாண்டில் என்பதை மதுராந்தகனுக்கு முன்பு ஆண்டவர் அதாவது சுந்தரசோழன் ஆட்சியில் என்று பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். கருகை என்பது ஊராக இருக்க வேண்டும். திருக்கருகை அல்லது திருக்கருகாவூரைச் சேர்ந்தவன் போலும்.

Madurantaka Chozha alias Sundara Chozha’s 3^rd reign year inscription ( 974 CE ), on the south wall of the same shrine of the same temple records that , the temple of Chozhakula Sundara vinnagar was constructed by certain Kesavan Karugaikkon for the God Azhivalakesava. This is in Tamil verse style.

Mukha mandapam was built on 08^th May 2003 and Rajagopuram was built by D V Subramaniyan reddiar.

LEGENDS

As per the legend, Brahma was separated from Saraswati. He was about to conduct an Ashvamedha Yaga without Saraswarti. Angered Saraswati, took the form of Vegavathi river now called as Palar, came in force to destroy the Yaga. Brahma requested Maha Vishnu to save his Yaga from Saraswati. Maha Vishnu took the form of sayana Perumal and stopped Vegavathi / Saraswati. After the yaga was completed, Maha Vishnu stayed permanently. ( The Kanchipuram Sthala Puranam ).

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Vaikunta ekadasi, Navaratri, Krishnar jayanthi, Puratasi Saturdays, Garuda Seva, etc. The Celebrations will be similar to Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal Temple. Annual Brahmotsavam will be conducted during the month of Vaikasi.

Sri Narasimha Sudarsana Homam will be conducted on 1^st or 4^th Sundays.
