KANTHALINGESWARA TEMPLE / KANTHALEESWARAR TEMPLE, THENNERI, KANCHIPURAM DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.

The visit to this temple is a part of Temples and Heritage Sites Visit on the banks of river Palar. Thanks to Mr Kesavan a Heritage enthusiast, who also joined with me in this Visit. This temple is  on the Thenneri to Vandalur- Oragadam - Walajabad road ( Near Varanavasi ). This temple is under the control of Archaeological survey of India ( ASI ). It is believed that the Thenneri – Eri was excavated by the Sangam Period King Thirayan, hence this place was called as Thirayaneri latter the name was corrupted to the present name of Thenneri.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with a beautiful Nandhi. The sanctum sanctorum is about 3 feet from the floor level. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

ARCHITECTURE
The square sanctum sanctorum is on a padabanda adhisthana in which deva koshtas are little protruding outside with padmabandha adhisthana & virutha kumuda. Pancharams / Like Koshtas are shown in salilantharam ( between karnapathi and salaipathi ). The Sanctum walls are with Indirakantha pillars ( 16 flat surfaces ). The prastharam is of kapotha style with Nasikood. Bhuta ganas are in Valabi and Vyalavari / yazhivari is in bhumidesam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of arthamandapam. A brick vimana of square shape is up to greevam and vesara sikaram is over the prastharam.  

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS:
As per the inscriptions, during Uthama Chozha Period this place was called as Uthama Chozha Chathurvedi Mangalam and during Kulothunga-I ( 1090 CE ) period, this place was called as Thirayanur alias  Kulothunga Chozha Chathurvedi Mangalam. It is believed that this temple was built during Uthama Chozha’ s mother Chembiyan Madeviyar. The Chozha period inscriptions are found on the Kumuda and jagathi. This inscriptions records the Gift of land, money towards poojas and burning of perpetual Lamps / Santhi lamps.
The temple was recently renovated by Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI ).

The temple timings are unpredictable. The Caretaker is posted by ASI, to Abathsaheswarar temple is also taking care of this temple.
